Bataclan Survivor: 'I filed a Complaint for Attempted Murder' (Rue 89, France)
"Very
early Saturday, or extremely late on Friday, I filed a quite futile complaint with
the police for 'attempted murder.' … People had tried to kill me. … They are
criminals. They will be punished. They are killers. They are madmen that I don't
want to listen to. I want to continue to live in peace with those around me. White,
Black, Yellow, Arab, those who pray, those who drink, those who wear a veil and
those who dye their hair blue - to be friendly with my neighbors, have a drink
with them and eat peanuts."

- Rue 89 - Original Article (French)
Armance Ageorges managed to escape the Bataclan Theater Friday
night, hands and trousers covered in blood. She sent us this account of what came
to mind in the moment - but mostly afterwards.
Very early Saturday, or extremely late on Friday,
I filed a quite futile complaint with the police for "attempted murder."
People had tried to kill me.
It sounds like a bad episode of a TV series.
Looking back, it's crazy: people tried to kill me. They killed and wounded
many of the people around me. People like me. Young, people in their 30s, bearded,
guys who could have been my friends - and that little boy with the helmet
wrapped around his ears. Did he get out?
Because I was at the Bataclan on
the evening of November 13, 2015.
In silence, I instinctively lay down helplessly in the pit in
front of the stage and under the low-angle light of the spotlights
as everyone else did, hearing the regular gunshots that made the ground
vibrate. I saw this guy shooting with a cold, neutral look in his eyes. As soon
as the emergency exits were opened by security guards, I saved myself by
running out. We ran among between the bodies as low as we could to avoid the gunfire.
We got out. Some were wounded and covered in blood. I had some on my jeans. I
had some on my hands.
In shock and in fear, we were then taken in by an
art student, holed up in a nearby building. I told my loved ones the news. I
used black humor that made some of the others hidden with me laugh and cringe.
I heard back from someone who was with me at the concert. Everyone waited for a
sign from friends and relatives who were there.
I am free. I am unharmed. I am alive. Many died.
Then we left. In a red truck a firefighter sobbed
in silence. Where I gave my deposition, the police were attentive and sweet. Me,
who never in my life had dealings with the police …
You were probably expecting a long, morbid description
of my personal experience. Those images remain in my head - but I can spare
yours.
And my real fear now, in addition to the idea of facing
a similar situation again, is to see people who weren't there but who suffer by
proxy, and guided by their fears, become hateful.

Yes - people died. Yes - I learned that it takes
cold water and salt to remove blood.
But I also know that all of this happened because
criminals decided to mount the greatest slaughter possible with the goal of getting
us to react, to force us into anxiety, terror and violence, provoke wrongful arrests
and paranoia, force us to watch little navels and drive us into a hysterical witch
hunt or prevent people from listening to music, gathering and being happy.
Their goal:
to trigger paranoia
That is why in France, in Europe, we mustn't go
that way. That is why one cannot allow blind hatred to take hold toward people
from the Maghreb or Muslims.
Their goal is to trigger paranoia - civil war -
and to prevent us from sending French soldiers to fight on ground they consider
theirs. But the Syrian people themselves - they endure death and terror every
day, whereas I only endured it for ten fucking minutes. The abstractions of
horror felt by the migrants and people who live there are no longer so abstract
to me.
Their aim is, objectively, to encourage more recruitment;
because all of our hatred, our racism and our fear will impact individuals - rendering
them uncertain and anxious. These are people just like you and me. The people
toward whom fingers will be pointed are normal, human, sensitive people with
families and friends.
Have a
drink on a café terrace
So I ask you: do it for us - the survivors of the
Bataclan. Go have a drink and eat peanuts on a café terrace. Say no to the
government when it tries to pass draconian emergency measures that are horrible
for those who will be victimized by them.
They are criminals. They will be punished. They
are killers. They are madmen that I don't want to listen to. I want to continue
to live in peace with those around me. White, Black, Yellow, Arab, those who
pray, those who drink, those who wear a veil and those who dye their hair blue
- to be friendly with my neighbors, have a drink with them and eat peanuts.
For now I'll finish washing my trousers and think
long and hard about what transforms a terrified person into a wise one.
