Ukraine and Syria: May Allah Make Russia's Pain Severe! (Al-Madina, Saudi Arabia)

"The sense of a united Europe is that the east is threatened, and that there is a need for tight collaboration on an issue so vital there is no room for hesitation or trickery. That was not the case for the sanctions against Iran, which were so regularly circumvented! ... Will China stand on the sidelines, or will it be quick to take advantage of one locked door to open its own even wider? ... To what extent will economic sanctions weaken Russia's criminal role in Syria? Oh Allah, make their punishment severe, and bestow comfort on the Syrians soon!!"

Russian President Vladimir Putin: More tha a few knives are out for the Kremlin leader, with some hoping Western sanctions injure him badly.

Who will blink first? Last week, during his meeting with Ukraine's prime minister designate Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Obama warned Putin of the economic sanctions Russia would face if the Ukraine crisis continued, either with Russia's annexation of Crimea, or its declaration of independent statehood with the consent of no one but Russia's. The referendum last Sunday paved the way for Moscow to begin meddling in the affairs of an independent sovereign state.

It isn't yet clear how deep U.S. and European sanctions on Russia will be, which is a superpower militarily, but not economically.

What can the allies do in their confrontation with Russia? Will Russia fail to bear economic sanctions, when even Iran managed to survive every form of sanction the U.S. and its allies managed to impose for years on end? Isn't the situation for Russia today different? Indeed it is, because the sense of a united Europe is that the east is threatened, and that there is a need for tight collaboration on an issue so vital there is no room for hesitation or trickery. That was not the case for the sanctions against Iran, which were so regularly circumvented!

Will Russia’s geography help it better withstand a blockade by land and sea? Will all financial dealings to and from Russia be prohibited, meaning the global banking system will be closed to all investment to Russia and capital flowing from it?

To what extent will Russia's currency collapse against the euro and dollar? Since the crisis began, the ruble has lost nearly 20 percent of its value! And to what extent will Russian oil products, mainly crude oil, be boycotted? And how will the market compensate for such losses! There is no doubt that in adopting comprehensive sanctions, Russian gas will be of great concern to European politicians.

What about the role of other major countries, particularly China, which will certainly not hop a ride with the American cowboy, unless of course it serves its own interests! Will China stand on the sidelines, or will it be quick to take advantage of one locked door to open its own even wider?

One last important question: to what extent will economic sanctions weaken Russia's criminal role in Syria? Oh Allah, make their punishment severe, and bestow comfort on the Syrians soon!!
