Academics, Artists, Leaders Call on U.S. People to Reject Donald Trump (Proceso, Mexico)

"His hateful discourse appeals to the bassist passions, such as xenophobia, machismo, political intolerance and religious dogmatism. All of these is inevitably a reminder of past campaigns that have been directed against other ethnic groups which resulted in the deaths of millions of people. In fact, physical attacks against Hispanics and calls to forbid the use of Spanish in public have already begun."

MEXICO, D.F.: Academics, artists and leaders signed a statement in rejection of Republican candidate Donald Trump's xenophobic campaign.

"His hateful discourse appeals to the bassist passions, such as xenophobia, machismo, political intolerance and religious dogmatism. All of these is inevitably a reminder of past campaigns that have been directed against other ethnic groups which resulted in the deaths of millions of people. In fact, physical attacks against Hispanics and calls to forbid the use of Spanish in public have already begun.

"Mr. Trump's verbal attacks are based not on statistics or verifiable facts, but on his most personal and unfounded opinions. Not only is he disdainful toward Hispanic immigrants (after which will likely follow other ethnic groups) but exhibits a dangerous attitude toward his opponents - who he describes as stupid and weak. He has accused journalists of harboring shady motives and he expelled a prominent Hispanic journalist [Jorge Ramos] who posed an awkward question. Trump has made vulgar comments about women, and his bodyguards and followers have attacked peaceful demonstrators," the signatories warn.

Among the social leaders who signed the rejection letter are the poet, environmental advocate and diplomat Homero Aridjis, sociologist and anthropologist Roger Bartra, actor Demián Bichir, poet, novelist and playwright Carmen Boullosa, journalist and novelist Martín Caparrós, filmmaker and screenwriter Alejandro González Iñárritu, essayist, historian, critic and publisher Enrique Krauze, journalist and author Elena Poniatowska, poet, essayist, novelist and journalist Javier Sicilia and winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize for literature Mario Vargas Llosa.

The signatories called on the people of the United States not to tolerate Trump´s xenophobic views.

"We condemn his attitude and hope the people of the United States cease tolerating his absurd positions," the statement concludes.
