America's Hate-Filled Rhetoric 'Unworthy of a
Democratic Nation'
"Spokespeople on the right, including Sarah
Palin, must pause and tell us where they want to take society in the United
States - and why the price of their reckless campaign against a
democratically-elected president isn't too high."
U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords: Gunned down while meeting constituents at a grocery store, she is in critical condition after a bullet passed through her brain.
It was only a matter of time before the hate-filled rhetoric of those in
the arch-conservative Tea Party turned deadly serious. Relentless criticism by
the Republican right had to eventually fall on fertile ground. The poisonous
climate of political debate in the U.S. since Obama’s election has claimed its
first victims - six dead and 14 seriously wounded, including Democratic Congresswoman
Gabrielle Giffords.
Finally, slander and threats against Obama partisans are the order of
the day in the U.S., the country that sees itself as the bastion of democracy.
Incendiary rhetoric of this nature can no longer be justified in the name of
freedom of speech. This hate-filled public discourse has run completely out of
control and is unworthy of a democratic nation.

Spokespeople on the right, including Sarah Palin, must pause and tell us
where they want to take society in the United States - and why the price of
their reckless campaign against a democratically-elected president isn't too
high. This super-heated situation, which has been whipped up into high emotion,
must be permitted to cool. A witch-hunt against arch-conservatives, which now appears
possible, would radicalize the country even further. In a country where gun
ownership is made easy and is the constitutional right of every citizen, such a
development carries far greater risks than in Europe.
