'Ungrateful' Muslim Migrants Face Post-Paris Fallout (Sotal Iraq, Iraq)

"As a result of political, social and economic oppression and a loss of human identity in Muslim countries, we grabbed our luggage, crossed the border, and as is our custom when we want something, we begged, submitted, and lied to obtain residency permits. ... Iraq - Sotal Iraq - Original Article (Arabic)

I'm not optimistic about the future of Muslim communities in Europe after a series of incidents involving social unrest (demonstrations by Muslim extremists) and murder, such as the brazen terrorist attack on the newspaper Charlie Hebdo. These have reinforced a negative image of Muslims that for political purposes is being sold to the Western public. Muslims residing in Europe, regardless of whether they support or oppose terrorism, face the crucible: they are being lumped together because most terrorists are Muslim.

Migration of Muslim Communities to the West

As a result of political, social and economic oppression and a loss of human identity in Muslim countries, we grabbed our luggage, crossed the border, and as is our custom when we want something, we begged, submitted, and lied to obtain residency permits. Since most of us suffered from rape, theft, extortion and threats to our lives in the process of fleeing pain, memories and history, we out to behave properly in our host countries.

As usual and according to the laws of the host countries, our bowed heads were lifted and we were blessed with freedom of thought, community support and economic prosperity. Most importantly, our stolen humanity was restored.

Giving back

It is necessary for us to give back as we should, and act according to the dictates of moral conduct, as the saying goes, “Failing to thank the created is a failure to thank the creator.” Unfortunately in Diaspora countries, some of us are breaking the laws governing every aspect of communal life. For example, people fail to abide by traffic signs; they forge official documents and circumvent systems of social assistance (by working under the table); they commit tax fraud and deal with contraband; and they commit harassment, rape and murder. It is a rare prison in Europe that isn't filled with Muslims who for the most part pray on time, fast during Ramadan and eschew pork. In host country prisons they respect the faith of prisoners and feed them according to their beliefs, and even communicate with prisoners respectfully as stipulated under human rights laws that are strongly adhered to in the West. This is how Western man created an advanced civilization.

The terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo

I don't want to delve into the advantages and disadvantages of laws on intellectual freedom. In Europe, nothing is sacred or has a red line around it, and if disrespect or insult takes place, the law provides for a response if material harm can be proven in court.

The problem lies in the vacant minds of those who think they can defend Allah and Islam based on a crude and immature dogmatism that relies on murder, destruction and terrorism. An attack on Shiite communities in Europe was widely anticipated, but not an open war between the security services and the extremists.

FRONT PAGE OF LATEST CHARLIE HEBDO - SOLD OUT

As we witness the emergence of a previously-unexpressed hatred some harbor in their souls toward anything that looks Islamic, what is certain is that the brunt of the pain will be borne by Europe's peace-seeking Muslims. In particular, Muslim women will suffer because they express their identity by wearing the hijab and pre-emptive police investigations will harass Muslim communities. We as the Muslim Ummah must condemn what occurred and demonstrate in solidarity with families of those assassinated in Paris and shift Western public opinion to the terrorism and political extremism that is the source of all the radicalism. Pressure must be applied to dry up the incubators of terrorism and silence those who preach in favor of it. We hope Europeans are able to shut down mosques that harbor and disseminate Islamist thinking.

As a proverb I didn't subscribe to until recently says, “Beware those that you do well toward.”
