Destabilization by Proxy: Iran has a Stark Choice (The Daily Star, Lebanon)

The conclusion of a deal between Iran and the world powers on Tehran’s nuclear program presents the Islamic Republic with a stark choice.

 

After months of talks with a group of countries led by the "Great Satan," the question now before Iran is whether it intends to pursue a similar process of reconciliation with its own neighbors.

 

For years, Iranians have stressed the simple message: Tehran wants the best possible ties with the other countries of the Gulf and elsewhere in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

 

Another type of rhetoric, however, emphasizing Iran’s expansive reach and influence in other countries, has also been heard, usually by a separate set of Iranian officials.

 

The Gulf States and other parties in the Middle East are warning that the region is on a knife’s edge and that Tehran's behavior, having concluded the nuclear deal, will make a huge difference. Events can only go in one of two ways, because the current situation is unsustainable.

Iran can finally put its money where its mouth is and provide concrete evidence that it seeks peaceful coexistence with fellow members of the "Muslim nation." If it truly wants to become an accepted part of the region, it should halt its policy of supporting armed militias in at least four countries where it has pursued this destructive tactic.

If President Rouhani truly believes his remark made on Tuesday that Iran has a shared interest in regional stability, he could start by helping his neighbors become stable - and not destabilize them by financing and arming competitors to those states.

 

If Iran can come to terms with its greatest enemy for three-plus decades, what excuse does it have not to pursue the same with countries that, in theory, are even more inclined to be its friends?
