The U.S.-Israel Unraveling: A Sign of 'Deep Transformation' (Diario Noticias, Portugal)

"We are witnessing dividing lines so deep that it's hard to find anything of relevance passing between Israel and the United States. By this I don't mean that the relationship is in jeopardy (it never will be) or that common sense will not prevail.  … Countries like Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt look with great suspicion at an American orientation in favor of Iran and an easing of sanctions in exchange for transparency on uranium enrichment or 'unofficial' coordination in the fight against ISIS."

Portugal - Diário de Notícias - Original Article (Portuguese)

The proof that the Middle East is in deep transformation is demonstrated by the state of relations between the U.S. and Israel. While it's true that Obama and Netanyahu need not be the best of friends for the alliance to remain strong, we are witnessing bilateral political deterioration as a result of a bad personal relationship coupled with differing agendas. It is impossible to separate Netanyahu's victory from his campaign rejection of a two-state solution and this moment of crisis in negotiations on Iran's nuclear program. The first recovered votes on the right and the second led Netanyahu to Washington to widen the chasm separating himself from Obama. But if these are "existential threats" for Netanyahu, they are part of the White House agenda for the Middle East, whether as a continuation of Democratic diplomacy, even if indecisive, or out of pragmatism regarding the role of Tehran in the stability of Iraq and Syria.

We are witnessing dividing lines so deep that it's hard to find anything of relevance passing between Israel and the United States. By this I don't mean that the relationship is in jeopardy (it never will be) or that common sense will not prevail.

My argument goes beyond Tel Aviv and Washington and focuses attention on their complex regional alliances. Countries like Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt look with great suspicion at an American orientation in favor of Iran and an easing of sanctions in exchange for transparency on uranium enrichment or "unofficial" coordination in the fight against ISIS.

Obama is making choices and signaling priorities that put at risk the stability of traditional alliances. He must bind the next administration, allow more autonomous behavior among allies and yet demand good results. The lesson here, and elsewhere, is that Washington can no longer determine terms on its own.
