Potential of Deal with America Goes 'Far Beyond' Nuclear Issue (Etemaad, Iran)

According to Iran's state-controlled Etemaad newspaper, President Hassan Rouhani's deputy chief of staff Hamid Aboutalebi, after extensively quoting comments by President Obama, has told the Iranian Students News Agency that in his opinion, President Obama’s recent remarks on the importance of reaching an agreement with Iran represent American society in its totality, and not just political parties, the administration or houses of Congress, which shows that making a deal 'is an opportunity that should not be missed.'

President Hassan Rouhani's deputy chief of staff for political affairs has echoed a statement last Thursday [Apr. 9] by the Supreme Leader, who said that, "if the other side desists with its mischievousness, this experience could be extended to other fields," and that the nuclear talks are a test of America’s political will.

According to the Iranian Students News Agency [ISNA], Hamid Aboutalebi wrote in his personal Twitter account that President Rouhani has insisted that no agreement would be signed unless all economic sanctions were lifted from day one. Then, pointing to a statement by Obama that “this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Aboutalebi said that if negotiations fail, it showed that the U.S. has learned nothing from history or from dialogue.

Therefore, according to Aboutalebi, the dialogue on the nuclear dispute is a space for testing the political will of the two sides which represents that best chance Iran and the United States have of putting relations on a new footing. As to whether the American president represents a change in the country, he quoted Obama as saying, "I think that it’s important to recognize that Iran is a complicated country - just like we’re a complicated country,” and that “there is no doubt that, given the history between our two countries, that there is deep mistrust that is not going to fade away immediately."

Aboutalebi again couched a comment with a quote from Obama, who said, "If in fact we are able to finalize the nuclear deal, and if Iran abides by it, that’s a big piece of business that we’ve gotten done, but it does not end our problems with Iran." According to Aboutalebi, if the two countries fail to reach an understanding now, there is little hope of being able to address the other difficult matters that separate them.

Abutalebi, before issuing a final comment, quoted Obama's "doctrine," which the U.S. president explained this way, “we will engage, but we preserve all our capabilities. ... [reports omits, "I’ve been very clear that Iran will not get a nuclear weapon on my watch, and I think they should understand that we mean it."] But I say that hoping that we can conclude this diplomatic arrangement - and that it ushers a new era in U.S.-Iranian relations - and, just as importantly, over time, a new era in Iranian relations with its neighbors.”

Abutalebi likened the current situation to an acid test for a new policy of gradual engagement, saying that he believes Obama’s remarks represent American society in its totality, and not just political parties, the administration or houses of Congress. Therefore, Abutalebi said it is his belief that the value of the dialogue between Iran and the United States goes far beyond the politicized issue of the nuclear talks, and therefore is an opportunity that should not be missed.
