Is it the mere fact of being surrounded by American citizens
or are we seeing signs of a semantic shift? Upon awarding the Legion of Honor
to the three Americans and one Briton who prevented "tragedy" by subduing
a terrorist on the train from Amsterdam to Paris on Friday, Francois Hollande showed
no hesitation mentioning the battle between "good" and
"evil" - rhetoric popularized by U.S. President George W. Bush.
"Good, evil, freedom" ... these are words that are
dear to American neo-conservatives. In 2002, to mentally prepare people for armed
conflict in Iraq - dubbed "Operation
Iraqi Freedom " - President George W. Bush evoked the struggle of "good"
against the axis of "evil," which was comprised of North Korea, Iraq
and Iran [Bush's 'Axis of Evil' speech, upper, right]. It was a modern revival of the "evil empire" theorized to
designate the USSR by the Reagan Administration.
Admittedly, Hollande's version of "good"
and "evil" is far more consensual as it refers to the battle against
terrorism and does not include any specific country, religious group or ethnicity
in the "evil" camp. However, it nevertheless demonstrates a hardening
of vocabulary on the part of the executive that has cropped up since the [Charlie
Hebdo /Jewish supermarket] attacks of January. Several
times, such as after the June bombing in Isère , François Hollande has announced his intention to
"destroy" or "eradicate" terrorists - again - language
elements inspired by American political communication.

[Prime Minister] Manuel Valls
has gone further, referring in the end of June to the "war of
civilizations," analogous to a theory popularized by American scholar Samuel Huntington

"Truly, this is a struggle for civilization. We are
fighting to maintain the way of life of free countries," the U.S.
president explained in 2006. By again utilizing these words, the prime minister
then drew the criticism of some on the left who had also criticized the words
of Nicolas Sarkozy in January: "Civilized men must unite to respond to this
barbarism," asserted the former president after the Charlie Hebdo attacks.

evil called terrorism there is a good, which is humanity. You are the
incarnation of that. That is what you embody," said the French head of
state during his speech at the Elysee Palace. "You put your lives on the
line in defense of freedom," Francois Hollande said, surrounded by the
four "heroes."
