Senator Barack Obama: Blazing a new
trail for America.

Obama's Victory:
Reason to Believe in a Better World
"Barack Obama has done it. The
Democratic Party nomination is his. If we bow before clergy and nobility, it's
no shame to get on one's knees to hear from a man who has changed history. … We
are on our knees. Even those who, like me, doubt his chances of being elected
in November, have to believe in a better world thanks to Barack Obama."

Barack Obama has done it. The
Democratic Party nomination is his. If we bow before clergy and nobility, it's
no shame to get on one's knees to hear from a man who has changed history.
He's still not president, but
just imagine how it was for a Black man in the southern United States in 1961,
when Barack Obama was born.
In Black schools there were
no Whites, nor were they in the bars, at restaurants or hotels. Nor were they
permitted in public restrooms. Blacks didn’t have White friends, or vice versa.
Or imagine a White man only
seeing Blacks across counters, in factories, or in kitchens scrubbing the
floor.
In 1968, myself
and three other journalists were refused service by a restaurant owner in
Alabama because there was an Ethiopian among us. When we called the police,
four cars came to "escort us" us to the state border so we wouldn’t
be attacked.
On Tuesday, with words alone,
a slender black man named Barack Obama who emerged from a poor neighborhood in
Chicago became the Democratic Party candidate for the Presidency of the United
States. He could be the boss, the commander-in-chief, the leader of the
greatest empire on the planet.
Imagine what those
southerners who believed in the superiority of the White race would think now,
seeing a Black man so close to the presidency. And many of those that believed
this actually voted for him.
We are on our knees. Even
those who, like me, doubt his chances of being elected in November, have to
believe in a better world thanks to Barack Obama.
And, almost as extraordinary,
in second place with a difference of 1 percent of the vote, is a woman. This
also deserves a bow. Long live the Democratic Party.
COMBAT
This fight began 16 months
ago and the primaries, four months ago. There were 54 elections, including the
caucuses. And this was only the first round.
It's impossible to say which
of the two candidates was more generous with their praise of their opponent
yesterday night, but supporters of Obama wanted more.
In victory the senator was
magnanimous. Hillary Clinton expressed many adjectives, but for those who
expected a surrender or even an endorsement of Obama were disappointed. Obama
supporters were expecting a bigger delivery.
The American political game
has more than one or two rounds. After all, the country’s sport is baseball,
where there is nine rounds [innings] - and not only just nine. So, what is the
next play?
Yesterday afternoon in an
interview with New York legislators, Senator Clinton said that she was open to
being offered the Vice Presidency. Critics immediately saw the suggestion as
one more opportunist bid to generate controversy and steal the limelight from
Obama’s big night.
For a candidate who started
out as the favorite, fell to disgrace and then almost got back in the game
these past six weeks, she remains strong and indispensable. Just need to look
at the map of victories in the key states and demographics.
She has the poor Whites,
women, the elderly, Latinos and Jews. Without her his chances are diminished.
There's more and more pressure for him to offer Clinton the Vice-Presidency.

There's a strong resistance
to her name, which comes with the heavy baggage of her husband. This is where
the promise of "change" fits in, which was the theme of his campaign.
The Clintons are Washington.
There just six months until
the election - an eternity with the possibilities of tragedies, scandals and
traps, but today, if one could unite the dream ticket and the mathematics of
the electoral college, the Obama-Clinton duo is invincible.
