U.S. Side Told Obama's Demand of a Ten Year Nuclear Freeze 'Unacceptable' (Tehran Times, Iran)

According to this news account from the state-run Tehran Times, Iran Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif has told Secretary of State Kerry that President Obama's demand that Iran freeze 'sensitive nuclear activities for at least 10 years' is unacceptable, and that the only reason Obama seeks such a freeze is to counter the 'propaganda of the Prime Minister (Netanyahu) and other extremist opponents of the negotiations.'

TEHRAN: On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif rejected as "unacceptable" U.S. President Barack Obama's demand that it freeze sensitive nuclear activities for at least 10 years.

Zarif was speaking in Montreux, Switzerland, where he and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met for a second day to find a final nuclear solution.

Obama said Monday that if Iran is "willing to agree to double-digit years of keeping their program where it is right now and, in fact, rolling back elements of it that currently exist ... if we've got that, and we've got a way of verifying that, there's no other steps we can take that would give us such assurance that they don't have a nuclear weapon."

Zarif said, "It is clear that Mr. Obama's posture is aimed at winning public support and countering the propaganda of the Prime Minister (Netanyahu) and other extremist opponents of the negotiations, using unacceptable and threatening terms and formulations."

The Zionist leader addressed the U.S. Congress on Tuesday as part of his bid to torpedo the nuclear talks.

"He's trying to, and I don't think trying to create tension and conflict helps anyone," Zarif told CNN outside the talks.

In his remarks in Montreux carried by the official IRNA News Agency, he added that Iran "will not yield in the face of excessive demands and the illogical posture of the other party."

On Tuesday, Zarif and Kerry returned to the negotiating table for a second day of talks due to continue until Wednesday afternoon when the top U.S. diplomat flies to Riyadh to meet King Salman.

Zarif also commented on his roughly two hours of talks with Kerry the day before. Asked if the two sides had reached an agreement, Zarif replied: "We'll try, that's why we are here. … There is a seriousness that we need to move forward. As we have said all along, we need the necessary political will to understand that the only way to move forward is though negotiations," he added.

Speaking after the morning round of talks, Kerry told reporters: "We're working away. Productively."

The two sides have set a deadline of late March to reach a framework agreement and June for a comprehensive final settlement that would lift economic sanctions.

Iran wants a swift end to sanctions in any deal - one of the sticking points in the high-level talks.

While the United States has played the lead role in talks with Iran, five other major powers are represented: Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia - a group collectively known both as the P5+1 and the E3+3.

Speaking in Geneva, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier sounded an upbeat note: "The talks between the E3+3 and Iran are also advancing well," he told the U.N.-backed Conference on Disarmament. "I would even go so far as to say that in ten years of negotiations, we never achieved as much progress as we have made this year."
