His Position Under Threat, Erdogon Trades Blood for Votes (Newsweek Polska, Poland)

"From the beginning, Turkey has watched passively the expansion of terrorists from ISIS or al-Qaeda in Syria as if it had signed with them an informal non-aggression pact. Now the Turks have permitted the Americans to use their air bases – something Washington has requested, in vain, for years. And on top of that, Turkey has itself attacked ISIS. This is a 180-degree turn in Turkish politics. Has Erdogan suddenly concluded that jihad constitutes a great threat to his country? The truth is likely different."

Poland - Newsweek Polska - Original Article (Polish)

Turkish President Recep Erdogan is prepared to spill blood in order to gain votes and a majority in Parliament.

From the beginning, Turkey has watched passively the expansion of terrorists from ISIS or al-Qaeda in Syria as if it had signed with them an informal non-aggression pact.

The truth is likely different. At the same time, Turkey has launched an onslaught against the Kurds. It's a kind of barter - Turkey joined the Americans in the war against jihad so that afterwards, the Americans wouldn't interfere with Turkey in its own war.

By attacking not only Islamic State targets but Kurdish Workers' Party positions, is Turkey - unlike Saudi Arabia,...

It was Erdogan who opened the way to Kurdish-Turkish reconciliation over 10 years ago. Recently, however, the results have turned against the Turkish president - which is why he decided to end it. The pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) won the June 7 elections with more than 13 percent of vote. As a result, Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) lost its absolute majority and still hasn't managed to form a government. Erdogan wants to regain his newly-lost omnipotence.

The scenario is as follows: the anti-Kurdish mood grows in Turkey; the Kurdish HDP fails to amass the votes to enter Parliament, and the AKP decisively wins early elections.

Until recently, Erdogan wanted to dictate policy throughout the region to turn Turkey into a direct heir to the Ottoman Empire - the local hegemon. Today his ambitions are different: he is prepared to shed blood to win votes.
