America's Image
Revives; 84 Percent of French Favor Obama
"The study reveals how much
the U.S. presidential election interests the people of other nations. A large
majority of Europeans are paying careful attention to the campaign,
particularly the French (68 percent), Spanish (67 percent) and Germans (64
percent) … Many felt that with the election of a new president, the foreign
policies of the country would improve."

The war in Iraq, economic
recession and an aggressive foreign policy: Over the past decade, the global
image of the United States has been tarnished. The latest study by The Pew
Global Attitudes Project
, on nearly 24,000
people in 24 countries and conducted between March 17 and April 21, 2008, shows
that while the image of the United States remains negative, a slight
amelioration has been registered over the past year.
But more significantly, the
study reveals how much the U.S. presidential election interests the people of
other nations. A large majority of Europeans are paying careful attention to
the campaign, particularly the French (68 percent), Spanish (67 percent) and
Germans (64 percent). Many felt that with the election of a new president, the
foreign policies of the country would improve, a sentiment shared in Europe and
on the African continent. But the Jordanians, the Egyptians and the Japanese
expect things to continue deteriorating; the election will change nothing.

BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT
Between Democratic candidate Barack Obama and his Republican rival John
McCain, the first is the unanimous choice, with an unassailable advantage in
Western Europe: if they could vote, nearly 84 percent of French would grant
their votes to Mr. Obama. This is similarly true in Spain, Germany and Great Britain.
In this hour of decline for
the global economy, a good number of countries consider that the United States
is a harmful influence and most responsible for the world's current problems.
The majority of Western European countries reckon that there is a direct
connection between the decline of their national economies and that of the
United States. Seventy percent of the British and French, and 72 percent of the
Germans think that the United States has a negative impact on their country.
Only India and Niger say that the United States has a beneficial influence.

In Tanzania (+19 points),
North Korea (+12 points), Indonesia, China, India and Poland, the image of the
United States has improved. On the other hand, those with a favorable opinion
of the U.S. fell in Japan (-11 points) and Mexico (-9 points).
Despite a slight improvement
over recent months, the image of the United States has remained negative,
particularly in Islamic countries: only 22 percent of Egyptians have a
favorable opinion of Uncle Sam. Similarly in Jordan (19 percent), Pakistan (19
percent) and Turkey (12 percent). A large majority of Pakistan's population (60
percent), Turkey (70 percent) and Lebanon (80 percent) consider it more
advantageous to regard the country as an "enemy" then a
"friend." In France, Germany and Spain as well, a solid majority of
opinion is bad. Only Britain - with 53 percent favorable - stands out from the
lot.
