Riyadh: According to sources within the Saudi military who spoke to AWD News on condition of anonymity, an increasing number of disgruntled Saudi pilots are refusing to carry out missions against the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The rebel officers argue that it goes against their ethics and religious views to target fellow Sunni brothers.

 

Saudi military intelligence has reportedly arrested two senior F-16 pilots who refused to fly missions in late October, after they expressed their utmost resentment at Saudi Arabia's alliance with the United States against what they see as “innocent and defenseless Iraqi civilians.” They accused the Saudi regime of being too docile toward the "vicious whims" of the White House.

 

White House officials and the CIA informed the Saudis that some of their American-trained pilots were jettisoning their bombs and ammunition over inconsequential or totally unpopulated areas and then returning to their bases in Saudi Arabia.

A growing number of Saudis, including high-ranking military officers, are convinced that their regime is using ISIL as a bargain chip to secure its own influence over the war-ravaged Middle East.

 

The crisis surrounding disobedient Saudi officers escalated when the two pilots who refused to fly missions against ISIL managed to access their Facebook accounts and post criticism of the Saudi regime's double standards regarding the U.S.-led campaign against Islamist militants in battle-scarred Iraq and Syria.

As the U.S. assiduously sought to form a wide-ranging coalition against ISIL, many oil-rich Arab kingdoms, including longtime U.S. ally Saudi Arabia, attempted to convince the Obama Administration that it would best serve U.S. interests to restore Saddam Hussein's notorious Baath Party to power.

 

The two Saudi pilots are have supposedly being held incommunicado, and no indictments or charges have been filed since their arrest. They are said to be awaiting trial in a military court.
