Friday marked the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement, which the North Korean regime characterizes as an 'instrument of surrender' of U.N. forces, which were led by Washington. This news item from the state-run Korean Central News Agency consists mostly of a speech given by Kim Yong-nam, regarded as North Korea's head of government [chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea].

Pyongyang: At the May Day Stadium on Friday, a grand national meeting was held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of victory in the Great Fatherland Liberation War.

Kim Jong-un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, first chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, appeared at the podium of honor.

KPA Vice Marshal Choe Ryong-hae, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the WPK, and director of the General Political Bureau of the KPA, declared the meeting open.

Kim Yong-nam, chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, member of the WPK, and president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, delivered a statement to the meeting.

Kim Yong-nam said:

"On June 25, 1950, the American imperialists ignited the Korean War to realize their wild ambition of dominating Asia and the world, using the Korean Peninsula as a springboard. By abusing the United Nations flag, they even hurled troops of its satellite states into the war, and applied the most brutal methods and means of war - including the threat of atomic bombs.

"In that war, the army and people of the DPRK defeated invaders of 16 countries, including the U.S. and south Korean puppet forces.

"The historic triumph in the war was a victory for the military-oriented Juche-idea, and outstanding strategy and tactics of President Kim Il-sung. It was one of the indomitable mental power of the DPRK army and people, as they heroically fought, closely united around the party and leader.

"In the three-year-long Korean war, for the first time in their more than 100-year history of wars of aggression, the American imperialists sustained a heavy loss, signed an instrument of surrender.

[Editor's Note: Kim Yong-nam refers to the Korean Armistice Agreement, signed by North Korea and China on one side, and the United Nations Command, led by the United States, on the other, on July 27, 1953. It is demonstrably not "an instrument of surrender." In fact the war, technically, continues. As the terms of the Armistice make clear, it is an agreement to stop shooting and come to terms for ending the conflict later. Unfortunately so far, "later" has never come. Neither is it possible, under the terms of the Armistice, for North Korea to unilaterally declare it null and void, as it claims to have done earlier this year.]

"For the way it beat back U.S. imperialism, the DPRK was widely known as a country of heroes, and its military and people earned global fame for their heroism.

"During the war, the Chinese Communist Party and China's government sent volunteers. Its noble sons and daughters, even given the challenges faced after their victory in the people's revolution, organized under the banner of resisting America, aiding Korea and safeguarding the motherland. At the cost of their own blood, they helped the Korean people in their just struggle.

"The example set by the Chinese People's Volunteers is a shining page in the history of DPRK-China friendship, and the Korean Worker's Party and people will never forget it.

"Thanks to Kim Jong-un, the army and people of the DPRK have welcomed a new era in which history and tradition are being systematically maintained to ensure victory, and it all began on Mt. Paektu. In this way, we are being reliably led in the cause of human independence.

[Editor's Note: The official biography of Kim Jong-il, father of Kim Jong-un, states that he was born atop Mt. Paektu at 6 o'clock in the morning on February 16, 1942. According to the book, his birth on Mt. Paektu was foretold by a swallow, and heralded by the appearance of a double rainbow over the mountain and a new star in the heavens. However, Soviet records show he was born in the village of Vyatskoye, near Khabarovsk, where his father Kim Il-sung commanded the 1st Battalion of the Soviet 88th Brigade, made up of Chinese and Korean exiles].

The great Generalissimos Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il should be held in high esteem as the eternal leaders of our party and people. They are the sun of Juche for all the ages. We should firmly uphold and eternally glorify the undying feats performed by Kim Il-sung for victory in the war, and the Songun revolutionary feats of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il that followed.

The army and people of the DPRK, together with progressive peoples who aspire after justice and value conscience, will continue to dynamically advance peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, Northeast Asia and the rest of the world.

As in the Fatherland Liberation War, only further victory is in store for the DPRK, following on the undying feats performed by Kim Il-sung in winning the war. The light of the Songun revolutionary exploits of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il continues to shine, as does the invincible Army of Mt. Paektu and the great unity of the military and people, so wisely led by Marshal Kim Jong-un.
