On Torture, the Kremlin Should Lead by Example! (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany)
"The
Foreign Ministry's commissioner for human rights, Konstantin Dolgov, called for the publication of the entire 6,700 page
report and for all the perpetrators to be brought to justice. Well said! Should
Washington hesitate, Moscow could lead the way as a shining example in this
area. Is there anyone under the impression that no torture occurs in Russian
prisons or prison camps because no such reports have been submitted to the Duma?"
The CIA report is a godsend for anyone who ever considered
American the true “Evil Empire.” Of course, Moscow didn’t pass up the opportunity
to finally be able to hold up a mirror to United States in regard to the rule
of law.
As a result, the Foreign Ministry's commissioner for human
rights, Konstantin Dolgov, called for the publication of the entire 6,700 page report
and for all the perpetrators to be brought to justice. Well said! Should
Washington hesitate, Moscow could lead the way as a shining example in this
area. Is there anyone under the impression that no torture occurs in Russian
prisons or prison camps because no such reports have been submitted to the Duma?

The difference is that there is no opposition in Russia that
could elaborate and publish such a report. At the same time, politicians and
citizens who in the Kremlin's opinion show too much of an interest in what goes
on behind prison walls stand a very good chance up ending up there.
