Showing Respect to a Hero: President George W. Bush

"We have lived through a period that not only saw the end of Saddam's criminal regime, but the establishment of a comprehensive, socio-political transformation. The moral duty imposed on all patriotic, honorable Iraqis is the raising of a statue of President George W. Bush in Baghdad's central square, thus paying him the respect and gratitude he deserves."

Baghdad residents hang an effigy of President Bush last month in the very square the author of this article, Khadir Taahar, would like to erect a statue to him. Taahar appears to have his work cut out for him if he hopes to convince his fellow countrymen of President Bush's heroism.

When will we acknowledge the debt that we owe him and erect a statue of President George W. Bush?

It's regrettable that the collective behavior of Iraqis isn't always rational, logical or wise, since our society is most often characterized by herd-like, demagogical behavior and attempts to alienate voices and movements that oppose ideological exclamations and aggressive sloganeering.

The process of evaluating President George W. Bush's achievements, particularly the liberation of Iraq from slavery and genocide, requires a great deal of rationality, realism and the ridding oneself of the influence of hostile slogans and false accusations. One must avoid the use of these as instruments of analysis, since such intellectual and ideological projections distort reality.

For example, when examining the journey of the American President, no one in the Arab world talks of his patriotism and devotion to country. As far as his patriotism and diligence in protecting America's interests are concerned, Bush has put in a remarkable performance. For despite all the objections and protests that have been raised against him, he stayed the course, determined to battle and crush terrorism. He avenged his country, managed to kill thousands of terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq, and purified the earth of their filth. But despite all of this, and because of the tyranny of false accusations and ideological slogans, no one speaks objectively of Bush's achievements, his patriotism as a political leader, and the bravery with which he has fought terrorism.

Both individually and collectively, Iraq's political mind must assess the Bush era objectively, by virtue of the fact that this man played a major role in writing a new history for our nation. We have lived through a period that not only saw the end of Saddam's criminal regime, but the establishment of a comprehensive, socio-political transformation. One of the most salient features of this change has been for the majority of people, successfully breaking free of the myths, idols and influence of the clerics and Islamic parties. For the first time in Iraq's modern history, people are permitted to publicly criticize religious institutions and clerics, discuss their backwardness, their lies, their thievery and their opportunism. This historic civilizational success would not have occurred if President Bush had not liberated Iraq.

The Iraqi people are called upon to set aside demagoguery and raise their level of national awareness in regard to the Bush era. It is time to recognize its positive traits and beauty, since he granted resurrection to Iraq after her death at the hands of Saddam's regime. The moral duty imposed on all patriotic, honorable Iraqis is the raising of a statue of President George W. Bush in Baghdad's central square, thus paying him the respect and gratitude he deserves.

Iraq - Kitabat - Original Article (Arabic)

I so admire the writings of Khadir Taahar! This writer raves with such frankness and clarity, and never shies away from shocking the reader with his contrarian beliefs - whether he (the reader) be left-wing, right-wing or independent. For him, all that matters is that the reader be an Iraqi. Why? Because regardless of their religious denominations or particular beliefs, Iraqis are uncomfortable with the international brand known as the “United States of America.”

To say: “They are uncomfortable” in a polite and civilized way is not to say: “They hate or are resentful,” since I don’t wish to annoy Khadir Taahar - who is more American than the Americans and even more than Bush, Cheney, Rice or Gates. He is more part of the American intelligence apparatus than the men of CIA and more Jewish than the Jews (remember his Kitabat article from April 15th 2007, in which he called for establishing friendly relations with Israel so that it could take part in rebuilding Iraq!)

I like the work of this writer because he isn’t ashamed or embarrassed to express his ideas and political views clearly and honestly and he isn’t afraid of critics of his writings. Nor does he feel the need to respect the feelings of other Iraqis, who take umbrage at his favorite leaders, the Americans, who have inflicted death, destruction and ruin upon them in the service of Israel and her future security, and at their hands of Washington’s creation, the terrorists, who came from abroad at the behest of their [Iraqi] allies and advisers from the former regime.
