Can Iraqis build their
nation? For the present and future, after the catastrophic losses and
destruction that have accompanied Iraq's modern history, this is the most
important question. It is imperative for the Iraqi mind to confront itself with
this existential question without justifications, slogans and evasions of
personal responsibility and by blaming outside factors.
The
administration of President George W. Bush relied on accurate, rational and
reasonable calculations when it liberated Iraq from the oppression of Saddam’s
criminal regime. He relied on accounts that the Iraqi people, who suffered from
oppression, repression, war, murder and the squandering of their wealth, would,
according to logical and scientific expectations, welcome liberation and take
advantage of this opportunity to tend to their wounds and begin building
themselves up politically, economically and scientifically.
But what the brightest
strategic minds couldn't imagine was that Iraqi society is only capable of
going wrong and never going right - and that we as a people can defeat logic
and reason with our backwardness and determination to defend religious, moral
and patriotic slogans that drain Iraq of all honor and dignity!
For the first time since the
liberation of Iraq thanks to the valorous U.S. military, the Iraqi mind has
been stripped bare, because for the first time, the Iraqi people find
themselves responsible for their own destiny. For the first time, Iraq has come
face to face with the toughest challenge ever, after having been freed from the
power of a government that thought and decided on their behalf and where officials
obeyed and implemented policies without debate.
It's unfortunate that Iraqis
have so catastrophically failed to overcome this challenge, adding yet one more
problem to their tragedy: the partitioning of power based on sectarian and
ethnic politics.
As a stricken people, we
Iraqis need to squarely confront many questions:
--Why since the beginning of
the modern Iraqi state in 1921 until today, has our nation's experiment with
party politics failed?
--Why such an absence of a
patriotic national spirit, any thought of the interests of Iraq on the part of
politicians and the people, and the tyranny of sectarian, ethnic, tribal,
political and regional favoritism?
--Why this permanent failure
of any collective government activity?
--Why do we view Western
civilization as an enemy, its scientific achievements with aggression, and why
do we refuse to open up and benefit from the experience and expertise of Europe
and America?
It would be a fatal mistake
to believe that today's political parties and politicians have a national plan
to heal Iraq's wounds and rebuild the nation, since it is this very political
class which has brought about the new calamity of the improper partitioning of
power. This has struck a mortal blow to the last remnants of national unity
that exist among Iraqis, who care only for their personal, political, sectarian
and ethnic aspirations.
We must confront ourselves
and our self-inflicted catastrophe by repeating the same question: Why … why …
why. We will hopefully get answers and find appropriate solutions, but is that
possible when the permanent Iraqi slogan is, “I'm doing what I want, come what
may?” to say nothing of the other dangerous and destructive concepts that rule
the Iraqi mind!

I so admire the
writings of Khadir Taahar!
This writer raves with such frankness and clarity, and never shies away from shocking
the reader with his contrarian beliefs - whether he (the reader) be left-wing,
right-wing or independent. For him, all that matters is that the reader be an
Iraqi. Why? Because regardless of their religious denominations or particular
beliefs, Iraqis are uncomfortable with the international brand known as the
“United States of America.”
Posted by WORLDMEETS.US
To say: “They are
uncomfortable” in a polite and civilized way is not to say: “They hate or are
resentful,” since I don’t wish to annoy Khadir Taahar - who is more American than the Americans and even
more than Bush, Cheney, Rice or Gates. He is more part of the American
intelligence apparatus than the men of CIA and more Jewish than the Jews
(remember his Kitabat article from April 15th 2007,
in which he called for establishing friendly relations with Israel so that it
could take part in rebuilding Iraq!)
I like the work
of this writer because he isn’t ashamed or embarrassed to express his ideas and
political views clearly and honestly and he isn’t afraid of critics of his
writings. Nor does he feel the need to respect the feelings of other Iraqis,
who take umbrage at his favorite leaders, the Americans, who have inflicted
death, destruction and ruin upon them in the service of Israel and her future
security, and at their hands of Washington’s creation, the
terrorists, who came from abroad at the behest of their [Iraqi] allies and
advisers from the former regime.
