Expose 'Dark Face' of a Nation (La Jornada, Mexico)

pretends to shelter every human being regardless of race, creed or color, at
least declaratively, there are many who don't share those ideals. So it isn't
unusual for other candidates of the same party to pontificate about the

Few would have imagined Trump's rebound in the opinion polls
after his rude declarations against migrants, women and the gay community.
Reality put the lie to those who doubted him. A few days after each of these
statements he again appeared atop the opinion polls - the preference for a
large segment of voters. Moreover, surgeon Ben Carson, who not long ago was
last on the list, has rose high after declaring the unsuitability of Muslims to
be president of the United States E/p>

What at first appeared to be a cheap appeal to gain support
has become a mantra among Republican candidates. The root of the problem is
that this has had a cathartic effect on millions of people who've found a
motive to vent their ill-disguised xenophobia and show the dark face of a
nation that has striven to change for years.
From deep in the catacombs where they have lived for the
past 70 years, beings have emerged who refuse to acknowledge the social changes
that have occurred during that time.
It isn't beside the point to say again that with their
irresponsible attitude, a Pandora's Box has been opened that may in time have
undesirable consequences for already-strained relations in the daily lives of
diverse sectors of society.
Between February and June 2016, primary elections will be
conducted which will decide which candidate will run for the presidency. There
are many months to go in which each candidate will make every effort to prove
he or she is the most radical and uncompromising conservative. In that race,
the targets of their attacks will not only be President Obama and the
Democratic candidates. As was seen by Trump's statements last week, they will
also be minorities - sexual and non-Christian alike.

Would a Donald Trump presidency be more of a threat to Mexico or to the U.S. body politic itself? La Jornada columnist...
There is nonetheless still time for sanity to prevail among
the other sectors of society to overcome this wave of divisiveness and turn
back such crude political manifestations.
In the context of this verbal violence, it is lamentable
that no [GOP] member of Congress or any of the candidates has expressed indignation
at the murders of 10 students at an Oregon university. The young man who perpetrated
the massacre possessed literally an arsenal in his home. The criminal silence
of those who insist on a right to own every kind of weapon has been reimposed - which is ultimately to the benefit of the weapons industry and its supporters
in and out of the U.S. Congress.
