Venezuela opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez turns himself in

to police last year: Are he and his allies benefitting from U.S.

machinations logistically, financially and in the global media?

Yes Indeed: Venezuela Coup Attempts are Aided by Washington (La Jornada, Mexico)

"The Venezuelan opposition detests democracy, but the instructions coming from Washington have lately forced it to shamelessly transition to repeated and shameless attempts to topple the Bolivarian government in order to take advantage of the best electoral system in the world, as defined by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. … An important element of the coup actions have been shortages created by big businesses that hoard or smuggle the subsidized basic basket of staple goods to Colombia, which they buy with dollars sold at preferential prices by the Venezuelan government. … With its embassies in Caracas and Bogota, the U.S. is actively involved with planning these actions."

Mexico – La Jornada – Original Article (Spanish)

On February 11 and 12 this year, Bolivarian security organs aborted a coup attempt nicknamed Operation Jericho which included armed attacks and air bombardment of a number of strategic points in Caracas. The principals involved were arrested, among them retired and active members of the military. Their statements and the investigation of events led, after several days, to the arrest and indictment of Antonio Ledezma, the Mayor of Caracas. [video fourth from top, right].

About a year ago Leopoldo López was also arrested, who shortly before was in Miami and issued a call to "speed the government's fall" and say "President Nicolás Maduro must leave office sooner rather than later … how can we wait six years? ... We cannot now assume an attitude that befits a democratic system."

López is responsible for initiating in January 2015 the destabilizing attempt La Salida [The Exit], which quickly turned extremely violent costing the lives of 43 people, among them Chavista militants and members of the security forces. The attackers were mercenaries among which were Colombian paramilitaries - including snipers who murdered some of those killed.

I have witnessed a protest by outraged members of the Caracas Committee for the Victims of Guarimbas calling for the perpetrators of these violent acts to be brought to justice.

Ledezma is the very prototype of the unscrupulous politician of the old party Democratic Action [Acción Democrática]. Like López, he participated in the aborted 2002 coup against President Hugo Chávez, after which both benefited from the generous amnesty ordered by the Commandant.

As [Venezuelan sociologist] Atilio Borón did recently, one might ask whether these individuals would have met same fate in the United States if they had attempted to topple the government there.

In his National Security Strategy released in February, President Obama says: "We stand by the citizens of countries where the full exercise of democracy is at risk, such as Venezuela." Here is the explanation for the extraordinary increase in coup attempts against Bolivarian Venezuela, since the dawn of the Hugo Chávez presidency one of the most democratic countries in the world.

The coup attempts intensified, particularly after the election of President Maduro in April 2013. Washington and the oligarchs decided to pull out all the stops to destroy the Bolivarian Revolution, taking advantage of the very profound physical absence of its historic leader. From that moment on the violence has periodically erupted against the backdrop of a massive global media campaign to discredit the Bolivarian government even bigger than the one carried out between Chávez' first election campaign (1998) and his death.

The Venezuelan opposition detests democracy, but the instructions coming from Washington have lately forced it to shamelessly transition to repeated attempts to topple the Bolivarian government and take advantage of the best electoral system in the world, as defined by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The opposition governs several states and a number of municipalities, and it has significant, albeit minority representation, in the National Assembly.

An important element of the coup actions have been shortages created by big businesses that hoard or smuggle the subsidized basic basket of staple goods to Colombia, which they buy with dollars sold at preferential prices by the Venezuelan government.

The United States, with its embassies in Caracas and Bogota, is actively involved with planning these coup actions against Venezuela. Washington utilizes foundations like the National Democratic and National Republican Institutes or solicits collaboration from figures it trusts to conceal the leading role it plays in these efforts, such as former Presidents Álvaro Uribe [Colombia], Sebastián Piñera [Chile], Andrés Pastrana [Colombia] or Felipe Calderón [Mexico]. Special mention is due Cuban-American legislators House members Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Díaz-Balart, Senators Marco Rubio and Robert Menéndez.

The purpose of the coup plots, even if they don't succeed in the short term, is to sow anxiety and disgust among the Venezuelan people that could facilitate loss of a parliamentary majority by the Chavistas in the December 2015 elections so as to create a climate of anarchy and ungovernability for President Maduro. They are playing with fire.
