Libya Demonstrates Fiction of the 'International Community'

"So here begins an uncertain war - uncertain because of the abstentions of China and Russia. In the name of human rights? In this inglorious diplomatic episode, human rights carry little weight for these 'ambassadors of freedom.' They lack the influence to draft a policy, that's for sure. Just the capacity to bring a tear to the eye of the democracies, which will have to keep the other eye dry."

A Libyan rebel: Can that nation's opposition movement dislodge one of the world's most determinded dictators - even with outside help?

We knew that the "international community" didn’t exist; that it was merely a journalistic concept; a lexographic creation of the media; a fuzzy representation of diplomatic imaginary. In fact, we suspected it of being a mere hydra devoid of morality or soul - a hodgepodge of interests, torn apart by national egoisms.

The case of Libya proves beyond doubt that this reality is the one we need to retain as the phrase's overall definition.

That is why it wasn't until the massacre of Libyan insurgents was imminent that the major Western powers made a decision - in a gesture too late to protect them from the vengeance of the bloodthirsty madman from Tripoli. A madman yes, yet not so mad, as he is a skillful player capable of planning a bloodbath by betting on the impotence of the E.U.-27, the hesitations of the United States, and on the ineffectiveness of French gesticulations to shake the cold cynicism of the G8. Bingo!

It was, in extremis, as a last resort, and after cruelly taking its time to the point that one wondered if they wanted to arrive after the battle - that the U.N. Security Council finally gave the green light to targeted strikes at the very moment that Qaddafi’s mercenaries dropped their first bombs on Benghazi.

Need I remind you that that the men of Libya's "guide" are armed to the teeth - 50 times more than their opponents - thanks to the oil money paid by the regime's good European friends … and who remained so at least until February 15th?

Hopefully, between relief and apprehension, it won’t be too late. Hopefully the air raids announced by [Foreign Minister] Alain Juppé will have been launched by dawn and will manage to halt the military columns that have brought death all along its sinister path to the "purge." But will there be anything to save when this happens?

After having spectacularly and never-endingly compromised with Tripoli, Paris restored its honor by snatching from its partners the right to militarily intervene in Libya's skies, with the support of the Arab League and America.

President Sarkozy had the courage to follow through with his bold and untidy call, which created such high hopes and gratitude among the Libyan opposition - but without being sure of his capacity to see it materialize. It was his foreign minister that kept his promise …
