To Alter 'Traits', Arab Men Should 'Marry Women from Asia, Africa and West' (Al Rai, Jordan)

"So how can we rid ourselves of our 'Middle Eastern traits' so as to stop being the target of such incitement, pursuit and investigation, and thus dragging entire guiltless countries into tragedy, as occurred in the cases of Afghanistan and Iraq? ... From now on, Arab childbearing should be Westernized. I don't mean that that Arab men should marry only Western women, but also women from China, Asia and Africa. Perhaps then, our Arab and 'Middle Eastern traits' as they call them, will diminish and eventually disappear, becoming like a form of camouflage."

Is there anything Arab men can do to avoid being objects of suspicion in the West? Columnist Ahmad Hasan Al Zouby has an idea: marry non-Arab women ...

Despite all the niceties uttered by America and Western officials when they visit our countries, and despite all the advertising and media campaigns launched by Arab and Muslim countries in an effort to whiten their image before Western society and to show that Arab citizens are also human beings that love peace, dislike violence and renounce hatred; after any incident, be it a balloon popping ceremony at a school or the shattering of a window in a building, the first thing that comes to minds in the Western world is to suspect Arabs and Muslims. And immediately, the international media begin talking about suspects with “Middle Eastern traits."

So how can we rid ourselves of our "Middle Eastern traits" so as to stop being the target of such incitement, pursuit and investigation, and thus dragging entire guiltless countries into tragedy, as occurred in the cases of Afghanistan and Iraq? Can we somehow undergo a collective facelift at United Nations expense, to remove our (suspicious) traits, so that our students can study in those countries, our sick receive treatment in them and our tourists travel to them without being the object of detention, surveillance, annoyance or “deportation” to ever-enduring Guantanamo?

Frankly, after the events of September 11, the London Tube bombings, the Boston pressure cooker attack and the Canadian train plot - something has occurred to me. From now on, Arab childbearing should be Westernized. I don't mean that that Arab men should marry only Western women, but also women from China, Asia and Africa, and Lebanon, for example [some Arabs consider Lebanese more culturally Mediterranean that Arab]. By encouraging marriage to Filipinas, Chinese and Africans, perhaps our Arab and Middle Eastern traits as they call them, will diminish and eventually disappear, becoming like a form of camouflage. Then we will be able to travel, move and trade freely in America without being haunted by the FBI or other agencies. Then the hotel cleaning lady will no longer suspect us, and the airport luggage handler will no longer expose us.

Since they reported that an explosion occurred in Boston, and a terrorist attack was foiled in Canada, and despite the fact that they know the identities of the perpetrators, I still check the map of the Arab world morning and night to see if they are all still there as if I were checking the fingers of my young son. I'm scared and worried about what's coming. Because if another “pressure cooker” explodes in Boston, it will mean that in our countries, we will hear the sirens of ambulances.
