Boston and the test of freedom: What rights should be allotted to the

perpetrators of these heinous crimes against innocent people?

From Boston to Guantanamo Bay: Protecting Freedom When it Hurts (Liberation, France)

"Nations of rights must resist and defend themselves by respecting the values that their opponents seek to defile. Yesterday, a U.S. report on Guantanamo nevertheless explained that after September 11, 'it is indisputable that the United States engaged in the practice of torture,' adding that 'the most senior leaders bear responsibility.' ... The legitimate fight against terrorism must be conducted without emergency legislation contrary to or a transgression of laws respecting freedom - including those of the enemies of freedom."

The terrorists don't only count their victories based on the number of deaths and injuries they inflict. The three people killed in Boston are a far cry from the monstrous deaths attendent upon the massacres in Baghdad, London, Tel Aviv, Madrid or Oklahoma City.

Terrorists also measure their victories based on how successfully they reduce the living space and freedom of the world's citizens. This desire to imprison explains the choice of target: the Boston Marathon celebrates New England's quintessential "all American" lifestyle, which they intend to break. Journalists on television immediately serve as an echo chamber, which is quickly amplified by Twitter. The symbolic images of athletes mown down by explosions become those of a country, the values of which these irredeemable enemies of democracy want to abolish.
