Spying Ruins 'Sanctity' of 'Holy' War on Terror (Al Madina, Saudi Arabia)

The strange thing is that at a time in which America justifies what it does by claiming it is in its own interests and those of the world, its officials are thrown into a rage when, for example, Chinese hackers infiltrate its own networks and spy on the classified information of U.S. institutions. Every day agent Edward Snowden passes in freedom means more embarrassment for the United States and the administration of President Barack Obama. The real problem, however, isn't what Snowden has revealed about secret National Security Administration programs to spy on Americans in and out of the United States, or its surreptitious tracking of phone calls around the world. Rather, the greatest storm has been created by the spy agency's monitoring of U.S. allies in the European Union, particularly the phone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel!

 

In response to these accusations, the United States says that it does so to protect its citizens and the citizens of other countries it spies on, and that this espionage is part of the framework of its “holy” war on terror! The problem is that the war's sanctity is immediately called into question when we know, for example, that the spying has long entailed eavesdropping on heads of state like the presidents of Mexico and Brazil, along with 70 million phone calls of French citizens in a period of less than two months!

 

These acts have infected the United States with schizophrenia, since as it spies on the entire world including its closest allies, it also distributes certificates of freedom and pays lip service to principles of democracy and human rights to third world countries.

The fact, however, is that this is nothing new to a nation that ignited a war on Iraq to search for weapons of mass destruction, but instead killed millions, displaced and abandoned hundreds of thousands, stole their oil, and left Iraq a weak state with no security to speak of. It was little different in Afghanistan, which up to now has yet to enjoy the fruits of democracy or security.
