In this case as in other, the public, at least that portion not prone to hysteria, doesn't assume the veracity of reports that the German chancellor’s mobile phone was monitored and potentially bugged by U.S. intelligence. If this were true, among friends and allies, it would be more than just an unfriendly act.

 

Nevertheless, Chancellor Merkel used the occasion to call the American president and inform him of her disapproval of such practices. Even if Obama, as he has with earlier accusations, dismisses the one somewhat curtly, a good number of them have proven solid: infiltrating the e-mail account of the former Mexican president; bugging French politicians; and now - potentially as I said before - monitoring the chancellor's mobile!

 

What is going on here?

 

In any event, the objective of this surveillance is to monitor the political personnel (leadership) in countries with which the United States is connected to at the hip. So the question arises: What's going on here? By whom is this operation controlled? What would be the purpose of such practices? For instance, do they want to know what their partners plan during economic negotiations?

The American side shouldn't have to wonder why calls are growing, for example, to suspend European-American free trade talks. The activities of American intelligence are becoming increasingly nightmarish for those in Europe and in particular in Germany who maintain close ties to America. Provided, of course, that these reports are true. That being said, the level of suspicion is growing. Is this really necessary?
