AL-JAZEERA NEWS VIDEO: Many Americans 'still mistrust' the Muslim world, June 3, 00:02:24RealVideo

The speech given to the Muslim world from the University of Cairo yesterday by the American president, Barack Hussein Obama, reflected a new and serious U.S. approach toward establishing a world governed under a new international legitimacy to seek peace, justice and prosperity for all mankind and a world free of weapons of mass destruction, a reliance on and compliance with international law and its decisions, without exception.

This new approach is tantamount to a spiritual return to American values and the great achievements of the Founding Fathers, who laid the basis for those values which endowed future generations with the capacity to implement and strengthen them.

That is exactly what Woodrow Wilson did through his Fourteen Points, and then there was Roosevelt, who oversaw the birth of the United Nations. Then came Barack Hussein Obama, who brought America back to its senses after it went off course, losing touch with the freedom, democracy and human rights that it embodies.

He has advocated for a world in which Islam is not considered an enemy and plays a pivotal role - not only because it represents a third of the world's population - but because the message of Islam is eternally a universally humane and civilized one, which urges peace and tolerance, rejects violence and extremism, and considers that whoever takes an innocent life, it is as if he took the lives of all humanity.

Obama’s historic call made during his address for a new beginning between the United States and the Muslim World as well as his call to confront extremism and violence around the world and establish peace in the Middle East, is welcomed and worthy of praise - not least because it's based on realistic principles and an aversion to bias and double standards.

That was the most salient feature of the method of approach during previous administrations in regard to the Muslim World and particularly the Palestinian problem.

But this chance for a turning of the page in relations will require the United States to translate these principles on the ground, and for the Arab and Muslim Worlds to demonstrate adherence to the tolerant message of Islam, which was once a beacon for the world through its noble principles and lofty values - values that greatly inspired the Founding Fathers of the United States of America as they laid the foundations of a country that has now become the world's greatest power.
