Egypt's Comments
on Israeli Nukes a Betrayal of Muslims
"The recent statement by Foreign Minister Gheit on the [equivalence of the] nuclear capabilities of Israel and Iran was bazaar. ... Iran has taken full advantage of the void left in the region by the Egyptian regime. This is what persuaded the
new American administration to re-position itself toward Iran. ... An Iranian nuclear weapon - if they acquired one - would be
a deterrence of benefit to Arabs. What can one say in the face of such a deception of hearts and minds?"
Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit: His recent comment that Egypt is equally concerned about the nuclear programs of Iran and Israel has rubbed some Arabs the wrong way.
The recent statement by Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit on
the nuclear capabilities of Israel and Iran was bazaar. He said, "the Egyptian perception of perils to our national security
don't differentiate between the threat posed by Israel's nuclear
capabilities and the potential threat of Iran's nuclear program." This
is erroneous.
In his statement, Aboul Gheit, along with the government-run
media chorus, persevered in mounting an attack on Iran and its policies. All of
this comes after Iran has taken full advantage of the void left in the region by
the Egyptian regime, which has explicitly conceded and minimized its own role - an invitation to Tehran to exploit the situation and extend its presence into
all areas abandoned by Egypt. This is what persuaded the
new American administration to re-position itself toward Iran and turn a new
page in cooperation, with Tehran extending its influence into the most
important priorities of U.S. policy, particularly Iraq.

The Arab world and particularly the president of Egypt [Hosni Mubarak] just stood by
and watched events in Iraq unfold, whereas Iran refused to be a spectator. Tehran
intervened and through a variety of means came to exercise a powerful influence
in Iraq, becoming an authority and point of reference in any dialogue. It also developed
its influence in other regions and though other powers, including Africa, traditionally
an area Egyptian influence. And what is our answer to this?!
Under the present regime, Egypt has been absent. With its
last breath [the regime of Hazni Mubarak] strives to remain in the seat of power
and pass it on to its sons [reference to Gamal Mubarak]. In fact,
it's no longer interested in any issues but this one. The system no longer has a
role worth mentioning, beyond the release of press statements made on the part
of the system itself or its employees - like those made by Foreign Minister
Gheit. Editors at government-run newspapers simply copy down what ministers say
and regurgitate it. They describe Iran as Persia [perceived as a slight by
Egyptians], which doesn't in the slightest disturb the Iranians, who revel in being
Persian and their ancient culture and even insist on calling the Arabian Gulf
the Persian Gulf. But why doesn't our treasonous regime and its media
comment on the government's failed regional policies?

Foreign Minister Gheid's recent comments are nothing more
than the outcome of the failure of those policies. For there is a big
difference between Israeli nuclear weapons and Iran's nuclear program - which
is still being formed. Because it's as clear as day that Arabs are targeted by
the weapons of Israel - a country that has raped Arab land in order to
establish the Zionist entity and which up to now has continued to practice its
anti-Arab policies.
Even if officials from Israel's government visit Egypt and
pay tribute to the president's wisdom, the fact is that an Iranian nuclear
weapon - if they acquired one - would be a deterrence of benefit to Arabs. What
can one say in the face of such a deception of hearts and minds? Even Allah
makes mistakes!
