NSA Crisis Exposes American Dream as Counterfeit (Okaz, Saudi Arabia)

There is no doubt that to many of us - people of the Arab and Islamic worlds, even the so-called third world - the United States undoubtedly represents an inspiring model to be emulated. To millions of people, it is a dream place to live in - and even to die in.

 

However, on closer examination, the economic power and wealth this model enjoys are built on a "house of paper bills," its cash mostly supplied by deposits from wealthy individuals and governments in the Arab World; its riches under Jewish control; its oil resources foreign (Arab and non-Arab); the origins of its scientific and technical might the results of the efforts of non-American minds (Arab, Muslim, African, and others) lured into building a life the United States.

 

In short, the material progress of American civilizational development is not purely American. Rather, it is a global product that can move from place to place, leaving behind a scientifically-bankrupt America. We all witnessed this "great power" at the brink of bankruptcy a few weeks ago, as the federal government shutdown, offices and departments were closed, and employees were furloughed.

 

Indeed, to the great frustration of many who once saw in this "paper tiger" an ethical ideal that transcends religion and morality, the utopian model collapsed. Now with the aid of the NSA contractor [Edward Snowden], now a fugitive in Russia, America's ethic of spying has been exposed. Leaked classified documents reveal mass surveillance programs supported by the American administration and funded with an annual budget of over $50 billion in taxpayer money, to spy on allies like Germany, France, other E.U. countries, and of course, Arab and Muslim countries (not to mention its enemies), in addition to eavesdropping on the American people themselves! Moreover, the American administration has conducted unlawful killings through drone strikes against the Muslim people of Pakistan, the suffering of whom is not much different from our own.

Recently published reports reveal the Americans also spied on French diplomats in Washington and the U.N. and other high-profile French figures, intercepted 70 million phone-calls made by French citizens, and monitored German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cell phone calls. The enormity of these immoral and unlawful actions is better understood in light of an annual budget of $52.6 billion allocated for such unprincipled intelligence activities, not to mention $5 billion a year for CIA personnel alone.

 

The list of America's misdeeds is indeed a long one - sufficiently long to convince any keen and objective mind of the truth regarding a flimsy model lacking in ethics, opportunist, and blood-sucking.

 

Believe me - time will tell this is the beginning of the end.
