America Itself, Not Obama, Deserves the Nobel Peace Prize

"They dared to defy their prejudices - past and present - to elect a head of state from one of their minority groups. … They have sent a concrete and exemplary sign to the rest of the world. That doesn’t happen very often, even in the most advanced democracies."

Must we abolish the Nobel Peace Prize? The question is being posed after it was awarded to Barack Obama on Friday. This decision, which oozes political correctness, is a pseudo good idea.

Of course, this award, unlike the Nobel Prizes in science or literature, doesn't crown the fruit of extensive research or a lifetime’s body of work. It is, in principle, for one or more people who have contributed to a rapprochement between peoples; to the propagation of human rights and liberty.

These are considerations that undoubtedly apply to the new American President. The man is the embodiment of a break with the Bush era. His language is “peaceful”: toward Muslims (his speech in Cairo); and he's in favor of nuclear disarmament (speech in Prague). His political plans are imbued with humanity, i.e.: health care reform in the United States and his international ambitions to cultivate reconciliation in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. And finally, the man incarnates the new America, one that has at its helm an African-American, just 40 years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Besides, is it not the American people themselves who are due this as a reward? They dared to defy their prejudices - past and present - to elect a head of state from one of their minority groups. In so doing, they have sent a concrete and exemplary sign to the rest of the world. That doesn’t happen very often, even in the most advanced democracies.

'THE GOOD INTENTIONS OF BARACK OBAMA'

[Hoje Macau, Macau]

Obama has good intentions, but do these suffice to make a great president? Certainly not. He has held his post for only ten months. His road promises to be long and fraught with pitfalls. Nothing says that he won’t be dismissed at the end of his term like one of his Democratic predecessors, Jimmy Carter -also a Nobel Peace Prize winner. But only in 2002, 22 years after he left the White House.

As for Obama, he still holds power. If this prize still has any value, it can only complicate his task, constrain his actions and expose him to “moral blackmail.” What if the new Nobel Prize laureate has to use force to resolve the Iranian imbroglio? In politics, the end justifies the means. To be victorious, idealistic principles and grand ideas must often take a backseat to shameful cynicism and certain compromises.

The Nobel Academy, which awarded the Prize to Arafat in 1994 but ignored Mahatma Gandhi, did no favors for Barack Obama on Friday.
