Next
week, with Russia’s help, Iran will finally be ready to operate its Bushehr
nuclear power station. The plant will generate
electricity, which supports Iranian assertions that their nuclear program is a
peaceful venture and not a military threat as is claimed by the United States. It
is apparent that the United States made false claims about Iran’s nuclear
threat just as it did about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction.
President Obama, despite his fine
rhetoric, has embraced former President Bush’s view of Iran as part of an "axis
of evil." The Obama Administration has tried every foul method to bully
the Iranians including sanctions and threats of war; but its saber-rattling has
only strengthened Tehran’s resolve. Iran’s energy sector in particular was hit
by last month’s sanctions, yet Iranians have stood their ground with no sign of
weakening.
Russian support in the face
of stiff U.S. opposition suggests that America’s attempts to isolate Iran have
failed and that Moscow recognizes American policy toward Iran as prejudiced and
hegemonic. It is shameful and outrageous that punishment is meted out to Iran
even though its nuclear program is well within the allowances of the Nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty, while countries outside the treaty like Israel and
India, are given technical support for their nuclear programs.

Ironically, the United States
continues to be the world’s greatest contributor to nuclear proliferation. One
need only recall the nuclear holocaust America inflicted on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki to refute its claims that the nuclear arsenal of so-called democratic
countries is not a threat to global security. Many Americans remember the event
not with a pang of guilt but with a shameful sense of pride. To this day, no U.S.
apology has been offered for these horrific nuclear strikes.
