American presidents: Are they all just someone else's tools?

There's No Such Thing as a 'Good' American President

Is it institutionally impossible for an American president to change the policies of the United States? That seems to be the implication of this editorial from Iran's state-controlled Kayhan newspaper, which equates President Obama's failure to win concessions from Israel with proof that even for a president like Obama, this is an 'impossible hand to play.'

U.S. presidents have always supported the criminal regime of Israel, giving Tel Aviv whatever it wants and holding it responsible for nothing, not even the murder of US citizens.

The recent meeting between Barack Obama and Benyamin Netanyahu marked the low point in this sick relationship. During the meeting, Obama spoke of a peace process that doesn't exist and concessions that have never been made. Obama wants the nonexistent peace process to resume with a Palestinian government that isn't the Palestinian government, and a president who isn't the Palestinian president.

Obama has thereby gone the way of all American presidents. The Obama who only last year demanded a halt to all Israeli settlement construction in the occupied West Bank is now history. It's a shameful moment for the U.S., and another disastrous moment for the Palestinians, the Middle East and the world.

Obama's refusal to heed U.N. calls for an international inquiry into Israel's attack on the Gaza aid flotilla is another sign of his collapse. But this should come as no surprise, since when 34 of its sailors were killed in an Israeli attack on the USS Liberty in 1967, the U.S. government did nothing.

But the attack on the Mavi Marmara matters to its passengers, the families of the nine who were murdered, the Turkish government and people and Muslims around the world who Obama addressed in Cairo last year. What kind of message does Obama think he's sending by failing to condemn the murder and kidnapping on the high seas of Muslims by Israel? The message received yet again is that Israel has a license to kill - issued by the U.S. government - whenever and whomever it wants.

To make matters worse, the Obama Administration has now committed itself to maintaining a ten-year military assistance program to Israel. The administration will honor an agreement struck by President George W. Bush that guarantees Israel military assistance of $3 billion per year for ten years starting in 2007.

In a nutshell, the man who seized the White House by fomenting a mood of irrational expectation now confronts the bitter price exacted by reality. The reality is that there can be no good American president. It’s an impossible hand to play and Obama is no exception.

That explains why Americans in increasing numbers have lost confidence in him. For the first time, negative poll assessments outnumber positive ones. According to a new CBS News poll, Obama no longer commands trust and his support is drifting down to 40 percent.

These polls suggest that Obama’s popularity has diminished due to growing public concern over his handling of the economy, as well as the two useless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. So watch out Mr. President, because this is just the beginning of your collapse!
