The NSA 'Panopticon' (Liberation, France)

The private sphere no longer exists. That is the central consequence of the gigantic drive for global surveillance that animates the United States, the organization and reach of which Edward Snowden has described in recent weeks in such meticulous detail. Nothing that is displayed, said or written on the Internet is immune to the electronic panopticon which scans, copies and stores every type of exchange. That this unimaginable mass of data may or may not be exploited seems like an afterthought, when compared to the brutal and likely irreversible infringement of what forms the very foundation of democracy: the respect for privacy.

As for spying on the embassies of European allies and local offices of the E.U., this grotesquely symbolizes the weakness of the Old Continent. Already unable to collect taxes from the American Web giants who operate on its soil and open their servers wide to the intelligence agencies of their country, how can the E.U. even imagine how to create, implement and defend a digital habeas corpus or impose its own laws on the ownership of personal data and the relocation of computer servers? In the words of Skyrock CEO Pierre Bellanger, Europe seems incapable of addressing the idea of "digital sovereignty," which is now an essential basis of the power of states. And it imposes itself, in fact, as the major ethical, political, economic, and international issue of our time.
