Assange and Correa: 'The Heart has its Reasons which Reason Knows Nothing
of' (La Hora, Ecuador)
"The Assange
case has taken attention away from other issues occurring in our country, such
as the case of false signatures [political parties boosted their memberships
with fake names] or the Narcovilia case
[the sending of liquid cocaine in vases via diplomatic pouch from Ecuador to
Italy.] It also makes one wonder what changes this represents for
the [Correa] administration. The 'righteous' cause in favor of Assange, which
many of our compatriots have not enjoyed, guarantees weeks of
distraction."
British Foreign Secretary William Hague: He is being widely pilloried for suggesting that the diplomatic status of Ecuador's embassy in London could be revolked.
The news has gone
around the world: The Government of Ecuador has granted diplomatic asylum to WikiLeaks
Founder Julian Assange. Never before, except perhaps during border disputes with
Peru, our various coups and the "September 30 Affair,"
has the country had attracted such direct attention. We are, unfortunately,
very popular. [The September 30 Affair refers to an uprising of police that
nearly toppled the Correa government].
The Chancellery's explanation
of its granting of asylum are that Assange, “may become a victim of political
persecution, as a result of his dedicated defense of freedom of expression and
freedom of press.” London says it has a legal obligation
to extradite the Australian to Sweden. The Swedes insist on the charges against
him, and deplore the attitude of Ecuador.

Since Assange provided
the government privileged information on U.S. diplomacy about Ecuador and
interviewed President Correa very flatteringly, there is a tacit commitment to
the famed computer hacker accused of rape in Sweden - a crime which is proven
would be a criminal offence - not a political one. In any case, as French philosopher Blaise Pascal said: “The heart has its reasons which
reason knows nothing of.”
