U.S. Urged to
'Curb Odious Conduct' of Anti-China Lawmakers
"The House of Representatives
passed this resolution, proposed by a handful of anti-China lawmakers, against
the firm opposition of China. This reveals their malicious intention to
politicize, interrupt and sabotage the Olympic Games."

BEIJING: Chinese
Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said here on Thursday that the U.S.
side should curb the "odious conduct" of a handful of anti-China lawmakers.
He also said that President Bush's meeting with a number of activists sends a
"seriously wrong" message to anti-China forces.
Liu made the
remarks when asked by a journalist to respond to a report that Bush met on
Tuesday with Rebiya Kadeer [A Uygher businesswoman
who was jailed for sending Chinese newspaper clipping abroad ],
Wei Jingsheng [former Red Guard who became a pro-democracy activist ]
and other anti-China persons.
"These
people have long been engaged in anti-China splittism and hostile sabotage
under the banner of so-called "human rights and religion" which have
harmed China's national security and social stability," said Liu.
"By arranging
such a meeting between these people and its leader - and by making
irresponsible remarks on China's human rights record and its religious
situation, the United States side has rudely interfered in China's internal
affairs and sent a seriously wrong message to these hostile anti-China
forces," he said. "We expressed strong discontent and firm opposition
to this."

Liu also
commented on a resolution passed by the U.S. House of Representatives citing
the "Olympic traditions of freedom and openness," and which
criticized China on human rights issues. The resolution also asked the Chinese
Government to stop supporting the governments of Sudan and Myanmar.
[Editor's Note:
House Resolution 1370 calls on the
Government of the People's Republic of China to "immediately end abuses of
the human rights of its citizens, to cease repression of Tibetan and Uighur
people, and to end its support for the Governments of Sudan and Burma to ensure
that the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games take place in an atmosphere that honors the
Olympic traditions of freedom and openness "].
"The House
of Representatives passed this resolution, proposed by a handful of anti-China
lawmakers, against the firm opposition of China. This reveals their malicious
intention to politicize, interrupt and sabotage the Olympic Games," Liu
said.

He noted that
such a deed in itself is blasphemous to the Olympic spirit, and contradicts the
common desire of people around the world, including people in the United
States. China has made solemn representations to the U.S. administration and
Congress, urging the U.S. side to concretely curb the "odious
conduct" of this handful of anti-China lawmakers.
Liu said that
holding a successful Olympic Games has been the dream of all Chinese people for
many years. He also said that this is the common expectation of people around
the world.

"With the joint
effort and support of the great Olympic family, we firmly believe that the
Beijing Olympic Games will be a major global sporting event. We advise those
anti-China lawmakers in the U.S. Congress to see the situation clearly and
change course to avoid further harm to their own images," Liu said.
He said China
urges the U.S. side to strictly abide by the basic norms of international
relations and stop interfering in China's internal affairs with the so-called
"human rights" or "religious" issues, and to avoid damaging
China-U.S. relations.
