Pelosi 'Harms the Feelings of the Chinese People'

Are Nancy Pelosi and other members of the U.S. Congress deluded about the true nature of the "Dalai Clique" and "Tibet separatists?" According to this "commentary" from China's rigidly state-controlled People's Daily, Pelosi and her allies have embarked on "an unpopular course" to "split the Chinese nation." What's more, in the alternate universe of the Beijing regime, most of the international community has sided with the Chinese government.

One apparent bright spot, however, is this paragraph, "The government is ready to continue talks with him [the Dalai Lama] as long as he truly abandons his avocation of "Tibetan independence" and halts his activities aimed at splitting the nation - especially the instigation and plotting of violent crimes in Tibet and other regions and the sabotage of the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games. And finally, that he accepts that Tibet and Taiwan are inalienable parts of China."

People's Republic of China - People's Daily - Original Article (English)

BEIJING: As the truth about the Lhasa riots has been brought to light and the violence committed by Tibet separatists has been condemned by the international community, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others have proposed a resolution urging the Chinese government to "end its crackdown" in Tibet and "enter into a substantive dialogue" with Dalai Lama.

This is a typical example of confusing right with wrong. The Lhasa riots were violent, premeditated acts, organized and masterminded by the "Dalai clique." This is an undeniable fact witnessed by local residents and foreign tourists.

Pelosi and other U.S. Congressmen have done nothing to condemn those who committed the beating, smashing, robbery and arson that took place in Lhasa, nor have they denounced the Dalai Lama and his followers for masterminding and organizing the riots.

Instead, they are putting pressure on the Chinese government and people. This cannot but prompt anyone with a sense of justice to ask what their criterion for right and wrong is.

According to some U.S. media reports, Pelosi said in March that what happened in Tibet was a "challenge to the conscience of the world WATCH ." But people must ask themselves who it is that is actually posing the danger. The truth is that normal life resumed in Lhasa after China's government took appropriate actions under the law. More than 100 countries have expressed understanding of and support for the Chinese government's actions, an indication that the international community sides with China.

The legitimate actions taken by the Chinese government were aimed at maintaining the country's legal system and public order and safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity. No country would tolerate such lawbreaking as the injury of innocent people and the destruction of public property. When openly encouraging violence by Tibetan separatists, people have to wonder whether Pelosi and others even have a conscience.

The Chinese government's policy toward the Dalai Lama has been clear and consistent. The government is ready to continue talks with him as long as he truly abandons his avocation of "Tibetan independence" and halts his activities aimed at splitting the nation - especially the instigation and plotting of violent crimes in Tibet and other regions and the sabotage of the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games. And finally, that he accepts that Tibet and Taiwan are inalienable parts of China.

However, the Chinese government will never bow to outside pressure. No attempts to force the Chinese government to make concessions to those who split the country and undermine national unity will ever succeed.

Moves by Pelosi and others are nothing new. Since the 1990s they have tried many times, such as during U.S. Congressional hearings on the so-called Tibetan uprising day and during meetings with the Dalai Lama, to advocate pressuring China on the Tibet issue.

If Pelosi and others cling to their unpopular course, their activities will ultimately harm China-U.S. relations. The growth of China-U.S. ties has brought tangible benefits to both peoples and has contributed to world peace, stability and development. But those who adhere to the "Cold War mentality" continue to try to distort the truth and disrupt harmony.

As political figures, Pelosi and these other Congressmen should have a clearer understanding of the trend of the times. They should show due respect to the facts and discard their prejudices, stop sponsoring resolutions about Tibet and refrain from doing anything that could harm the feelings of the Chinese people, thereby undermining China-U.S. relations.
