Obama and Romney Luck Out: George W. Steps Back into the Breach! (Le Figaro, France)

“Mute since the beginning of Obama’s term in office, Bush the 'dunce' has detected signs favorable to his reemergence. It could be that the pitiful performance of Mitt Romney, the likely Republican nominee in November, may have restored his own confidence in himself – perhaps his presidency was less disastrous than people said.”

France - Le Figaro - Original Article (French)

One had taken to the habit of forgetting about G.W. Bush. But there he is, disguised as an economist, with a book that will sit on every night table and the shelves of the George W. Bush Library in Texas when it is published on July 17. No, it is not a comic. It is The 4% Solution, compiled under his direction by economist-friends, five of which are Nobel Prize winners, has the goal of reviving the U.S. economy and returning to prosperity. Obama and Romney will appreciate this. What a comeback!

Mute since the beginning of Obama’s term in office, Bush the “dunce” has detected signs favorable to his reemergence. It could be that the pitiful performance of Mitt Romney, the likely Republican nominee in November, may have restored his own confidence in himself – perhaps his presidency was less disastrous than people said.

Particularly since three days ago, Paul Krugman, also a Nobel Prize winner in Economics and confirmed Democrat, headed his editorial: I Miss Bush’s Honesty. [It was a comment by Krugman to Politico – not an editorial]. Was this a veritable endorsement of George W. Bush? Or just contempt inspired by Republican standard bearer Mitt Romney? No matter, it is a great opportunity for the 43rd president to show himself. The New York Times has reviewed the book and taken note of George W.’s return. But the paper uses a photograph that is a less than flattering cliché of the former president [below]. Is this hypocrisy?

Former President George W. Bush at a Texas Rangers baseball

game: Is the use of this photo dirty pool?

He has been silent as the grave since the election of Barack Obama. Since his entire family paraded to the White House to receive the 44th president and returned to Texas, George W. chose to stay at his camp. His only contribution to the Republican primary consists of four words: “I’m for Mitt Romney,” uttered to a reporter as the doors to an elevator closed. Even when his parents organized a fundraiser for Romney, there was nothing more from Bush. With his book, like an old hand, he is entering the campaign from afar.

Could he be walking in the footsteps of Bill Clinton? After all, they both served two terms in office! A permanent presence in the architecture of the campaign, number 42 supports Obama and the Democrats and never misses an opportunity to offer advice about what to do. With his book Back to Work, Clinton has already laid down a long term forecast. Thus, The 4% Solution by George W. could serve as the foundation for a Republican debate – perhaps even a national one, which would bring George Bush back into the fast-paced world of current affairs. That’s what former presidents do.

He certainly knows crisis. The one early in his first term was followed by slow growth giving way to the financial abyss at the end of his second term in 2008. He doesn’t try to justify his past but looks for what could trigger a return to growth. He sets a target of 4 percent, which would make everything better, even if growth since 1948 has averaged 3.2 percent, and is just under 2 percent today. But Bush goes so far as to rewrite history: Admittedly, with 4 percent growth since 1948, the economy would be 50 percent richer!

Will George W. Bush, “Mr. 4%,” convince Americans?
