Newton Leroy Gingrich: America's
'Hypocritical Moralizing Apostle'
"Far-right Republicans see in
Gingrich a mirror image of themselves: a retro-party led by angry White men,
whose frustration with the challenges of globalization has erupted into
resentment. Gingrich understands this sentiment better than anyone. And he uses
it in the worst way."
For Republicans, South
Carolina is sending some potentially devastating news: out of a raft of
candidates, conservatives aren't selecting a leader with the best chances of beating
President Barack Obama. Rather, they are electing the incarnation of the angry
American.
Newt Gingrich is carrying
more heavy “baggage” than could possibly fit in his campaign bus. As Republican
House speaker during the Clinton years, he is the ultimate Washington insider.
He tried to relieve the president of his post because of the Lewinsky sex
scandal, while he himself was having an affair. Meanwhile, this sanctimonious
moralizing apostle is married to his third wife. Friends in his own party
chased him out of Congress because of a long list of ethical misconduct.

Of all people, irony of
ironies, this is the candidate promising to renew America. Really?
Far-right Republicans see in
Gingrich a mirror image of themselves: a retro-party led by angry White men,
whose frustration with the challenges of globalization has erupted into
resentment.
Gingrich understands this
sentiment better than anyone. And he uses it in the worst way by turning angst
against elitists into a populist campaign against “Washington” and “Wall Street.”
In Romney, the winner of
South Carolina has found the gift that keeps on giving. Romney is a candidate who
has failed from the beginning to convince three-quarters of Republican voters -
despite his enormous campaign organization and bulging pocketbook. And no one
buys into the notion of Romney being angry. Why should they? For ten years he’s
been living in semi-retirement off of an estimated fortune of $250 million -
and on which he pays a mini-tax of 15 percent. Not exactly the everyday experience
of his supporters. Romney needs to stop the wave of voter rage at the next
primary in Florida. Otherwise he risks being swept away by it.
