'Yankee' Sanctions on Venezuela 'Wound Dignity of Latin America'

"We remind the arrogant Yankee government that our countries - at least most of them - have decided to become sovereign and free as the eagles. Asking for level-headedness, respect, and courtesy from the empire is like begging for objectivity from the right, or ugliness from the full moon - or as they say here, pears from the elm tree."

The government of the United States - that is to say, the empire, is well known for its brutality and brazenness. It's also stubborn in its amnesia. Obama shouts himself hoarse, imploring us to forget the past. The past is intervention; the past is arrogance and contempt for the sovereignty of nations; the past is murder; the past is violation without thought or shame in regard to international law. Like clockwork and algebraic precision, the present is the same.

The government of the United States, through the chapped lips of someone who once seemed so attractive, the implacable lady Hillary Clinton, announced in May sanctions against Venezuela's state oil company (PDVSA) because of its ties with Iran. The United States maintains relations with any country it wants - including the genocidal Israel - as is its right. All countries have relations with whatever nations they care to, in accordance with United Nations agreements. Venezuela, an energy-producing country, has energy-relations with Iran, an oil producing country. And if it didn't have such relations that would be Venezuela's affair, although not having them would be stupid and unnatural.

It's elementary: the sanctions wound the dignity of Latin America, and are part of the arsenal of odious old tricks of the Yankee Empire. We stand in solidarity with Bolivarian Venezuela and our brother, the gladiator Hugo Chávez.

We remind the arrogant Yankee government that our countries - at least most of them - have decided to become sovereign and free as the eagles. Asking for level-headedness, respect, and courtesy from the empire is like begging for objectivity from the right, or ugliness from the full moon - or as they say here, pears from the elm tree. We will be independent, Mr. Yankee, gentlemen of the right, irreversibly doing things for ourselves.
