Washington's 'Creative Chaos' in Egypt Must Be Blocked (Al Madina, Saudi Arabia)

"America threw all of its weight behind the Muslim Brotherhood. Washington ignored the Brotherhood's actions and exaggerated measures taken against it. The U.S. recruited American and European media to portray events as it wished, exerted pressure on Europe to take positions supportive of the Muslim Brotherhood, and pushed the commander of NATO to openly intervene by commenting and warning about recent events in Egypt."

Egypt's former dictator Hosni Mubarak inside a courtroom cage: Is it a coincidence that now, after the toppling of Egypt's first democratically-elected president by the military, a court has ordered his release on bail?

What is going on in Egypt is more dangerous than the question of whether to allow or prevent the Muslim Brotherhood from ruling the country. America threw all of its weight behind the Muslim Brotherhood. Washington ignored the Brotherhood's actions and exaggerated measures taken against it. The U.S. recruited American and European media to portray events as it wished, exerted pressure on Europe to take positions supportive of the Muslim Brotherhood, and pushed the commander of NATO to openly intervene by commenting and warning about recent events in Egypt. For the massive ongoing media campaign against Egypt and its people [i.e.: the military and its interim government], the U.S. never needed to lift a finger to recruit anyone. Even so, Egyptians came out on the streets to bring down the Muslim Brotherhood. What is going on now is simply an attempt on the part of Americans to restore the bloody train of transformation back to a track they long favored.

There are two schools of thought on the new/old U.S. position. The first was mentioned by Dr. Maamoun Fendi in an article published by Al Sharq Al Awsat ten years ago, on Nov, 25 2003, when he wrote: "The yearly meeting of the Muslim Brotherhood will take place in an Arab country, and will include dialogue between the Brotherhood and America. This appears to be part of Washington's attempt to look for alternative leadership in the Arab world, because they think that the Brotherhood are better placed to combat al-Qaeda's brand of Islam with a moderate form.”

This was the banner with which the Brotherhood markets itself among Western countries.

This analytical trend was observed again by Abdul Rahman Al Rashed in his daily column in the Al Sharq Al Awsat last Saturday, when he wrote: "Most Western commentators agree that the Brotherhood holds the key to terrorism, and they can turn it on or off. This seems to be something being marketed by other parties on behalf of the Brotherhood in America and Europe."

The other school of thought on America's position is based on the "Rumsfeld Principle," named for the U.S. defense secretary during the Iraq invasion. This called for deploying "creative chaos" in both the Arab and Muslim worlds to reach a result pleasing to the West, and particularly America, and according to which would emerge Western-friendly democracies - or at least governments that could control the thoughts and Islamic tendencies of their citizens in ways that would not pose a danger outside the borders of these countries.

Such chaos was indeed infused in Iraq, where a sectarian conflict erupted with the help of proxies supported by foreign interests, be they Shiite, such as Iran and Lebanese Hezbullah, or Sunni, such as al-Qaeda and Islamic Jihad. Ten years have passed and there is still no sign of stability in the country or the provision of security for its citizens. The Americans are preparing to withdraw from Afghanistan next year without finalizing appropriate arrangements for the maintenance of some degree of security and stability. The Obama Administration is moving to achieve a rapid withdrawal without any military security arrangements, under the pretext that it cannot find agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. This is a repetition of what it said about the lack of agreement with Prime Minister Maliki when it withdrew from Iraq in such a hurry.

Are Egyptians succeeding in stopping the path to “creative chaos” and the installation of Muslim Brotherhood rulers in the region? Or is this an emergency situation in which the international community (America) will strive to overcome and return the train to its track before it affects other areas where the Brotherhood are active, such as Yemen, Tunisia and Libya?
