A man with the corpse of a friend, killed by government forces

in Giza, Egypt. If 'violence begets more violence', the ugliness

in the country may have only just begun.

Western-Sanctioned 'Butchery' in Egypt (Liberation, France)

"General al-Sisi, the country's strongman, has revealed the regime's true nature. He intends to establish - by force - a military dictatorship in the mould of Mubarak's. ... The West, which de facto supported the coup d'état, must condemn this violent massacre, which will only bring further repression in its wake. The democrats and secular forces who now support this butchery are deluding themselves if they think - once they are in the military's way - they'll be spared."

Egyptian strongman General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi: Whatever he's up to, it involves killing large numbers of people.

LIVE WEB CAM FROM TAHRIR SQUARE, CAIRORealVideo

A massacre is a massacre and indignation cannot be selective. After toppling the first truly elected president in Egyptian history, the military junta has deliberately executed hundreds of its citizens. Live bullets to the head or chest, shot by men ordered to kill. The Muslim Brotherhood certainly doesn't represent the ideal of freedom fighters. Some - a few - are armed, but most of the victims are civilians, bare-handed and slaughtered.

General al-Sisi, the country's strongman, has revealed the regime's true nature. He intends to establish - by force - a military dictatorship in the mould of Mubarak's. ElBaradei, who up to now had cautiously backed the military coup, ultimately understood the trap into which he had fallen [and resigned as interim vice president]. The West, which de facto supported the coup d'état, must condemn this violent massacre, which will only bring further repression in its wake. The democrats and secular forces who now support this butchery are deluding themselves if they think - once they are in the military's way - they'll be spared. Ultimately this blind violence will only serve the Islamists, in Egypt as elsewhere in the Muslim world.

The military is desperate to retain its influence and privileges, including to trigger a civil war in the country - as al-Assad has done in Syria. This indiscriminate violence can only feed and ultimately serve the interests of the Islamists, not only in Egypt but throughout the Muslim world. The Egyptian generals have killed the Arab Spring.
