Criticism of Poland’s CIA Prison Discredits the Left (Rzeczpospolita,
Poland)
“The death of
al-Qaeda is not the only casualty of the war on terror. The leftist theory of
the responsibility of the West for all the world’s sins has also been killed. …
That is why there is a need to find the culprits – to move the goal posts, and call
the war on terror a bad one. That is why there are leaks from inside the
left-wing U.S. administration about prisons and torture.”
War is sometimes cruel and unjust. It sounds corny, but left-wing
European politicians and journalists need to be reminded of some simple truths.
Terrorist and murderer Abd
al-Rahim al-Nashiri is threatened
with the death penalty in the United States. So in desperation, he has accused
the Polish government of torture and illegal detention.
American agents managed to extract information from the
captured outlaw about members of murderous al-Qaeda, who are planning further
attacks. The operation most likely took place at a base in Poland. But having someone doused with water in Masuria (north-east Poland) was not the
most terrible thing in this war; innocent people were murdered in the attacks
on the streets of London, Madrid, and New York.

Poland - a member of NATO - was, after September 11, 2001,
among the countries offering moral support and strength to America. It would be
strange if we refused to lend our bases for the purpose of transporting and
interrogating terrorists. In varying degrees, others, such as Germany, Italy,
Great Britain, Denmark and Romania, also offered their assistance.
Whatever we can say today about the progress of coalition
forces in Afghanistan, al-Qaeda is being suppressed. Since the attack on the
London Underground in 2005, there hasn’t been a single successful act of
terrorism by the group. Networks of murderers have been smashed, most of their
leaders killed and news channels and sources of funding taken over. And Poland
has been a part of these successes.
But the death of al-Qaeda is not the only casualty of the
ten-year war on terror. The leftist theory of the responsibility of the West
for all the world’s sins has also been killed. That goes for unemployment,
hunger in Africa, the Soviet collapse, crop failures in Asia and the harm done
by Muslim fundamentalists.
The defense of a strong state, the superiority of Western
civilization over fundamentalism, and a love of economic liberty - these are
the real heroes of this battle. For left-wing circles in Europe and America - who
for years have based their moral authority on reluctance toward a strong nation
and free market - this is a blow. They have lost a powerful tool of integration
and moral blackmail of the elite. That is why there is a need to find the
culprits – to move the goal posts, and call the war on terror a bad one. That
is why there are leaks from inside the left-wing U.S. administration about
prisons and torture, as well as telling us that we acted unlawfully.
Poland, by refusing to provide data on the prison to the
European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, protects something more than
loyalty to those who took our international obligations seriously: it is also a
defense against the insanity of left-wing relativism.
