Let's Give Afghans 'One More Chance'

"The outlines of a state, painfully, are coming into view - and most of the country doesn't want the Taliban. Perhaps we should give one more chance to this tortured process, rather than resigning ourselves to an Islamist victory that would have incalculable consequences."

Afghanistan's former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah has a shot at unseating President Hamid Karzai, widely seen as corrupt and inept by the West. But whether the second round of voting can be rendered free and fair remains to be seen.

How can we fight a war we cannot win - but can't afford to lose? Since his inauguration, Barack Obama has confronted this impossible dilemma. As part of their cruel routine, the Taliban have once again sacrificed their own to kill U.N. workers dedicated to the work of peace, after having massacred a much larger number of Afghan civilian - or, as occurred yesterday in Peshawar - Pakistanis.

This barbaric offensive complicates the everyday work of the president. Except for a strategy of immediate withdrawal, which he refuses to consider at this point, that of "Afghanization" - as was conducted by Richard Nixon in Vietnam with his policy of "Vietnamization" - is the only coherent, if not safe, approach. The fury with which the Taliban have sought to prevent the elections from being held shows that this is not an unfounded notion.

Furthermore, Afghan political parties must cease making fraud the basis of their electoral code. In addition, Western militaries mustn't wear out their fragile status as liberators to become detested occupiers.

It remains to be seen whether these policies will bring a solution. The exercise requires tenacity and nuance. A second round in the presidential election has now been scheduled. The outlines of a state, painfully, are coming into view - and most of the country doesn't want the Taliban. Perhaps we should give one more chance to this tortured process, rather than resigning ourselves to an Islamist victory that would have incalculable consequences.
