Is Western media
coverage of the Iranian election all being organized by the Israeli government?
That seems to be the implication of comments made by Iranian Foreign Ministry
spokesman Hassan Qashqavi and reported by the Islamic Republic's conservative,
state-controlled Kayhan newspaper.
TEHRAN: Iran
condemned on Monday foreign interference by certain Western states in the
country's internal affairs.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi said that some
European countries along with the U.S.
have played a major role in provoking the post-election violence that has
killed scores of people over the past few days.
Qashqavi made the remarks as the latest pictures show normal
traffic on Tehran streets, which
also witnessed calm on Monday and the day before. On Saturday, terrorist
elements who had infiltrated the rallies spurred the most violent day of
protests by setting fire to a mosque and two gas stations, as well as killing a
number of people.
“With the central goal of sowing ethnic discord, Western
powers have interfered in the election process by aggrandizing the protests
staged against the poll results,” said Qashqavi, at his weekly press
conference.
“France
has gone as far as calling for the annulment of the election. What right do
they have to make such inappropriate and irresponsible remarks?” asked
Qashqavi, asserting that the Tehran
government will respond to this stepped-up “foreign interference” in due
course.
Qashqavi went on to criticize foreign media outlets for
dramatizing post-election developments in Iran,
saying that their efforts to launch a cyberwar against the government are
“totally out of line.”

“They have resorted to hacking Iranian news sites as a means
of widening the gap between the government and the people,” he said, charging
global broadcasters like the BBC and Voice
of America with seeking to break up the Islamic Republic with their
coverage.
"The heads of VOA
and BBC Persian are the spiritual children of
(Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu and (Israeli Foreign Minister
Avigdor) Lieberman - and their aim is to weaken Iran's
national solidarity, threaten its territorial integrity and cause it to
disintegrate."
"This is the agenda handed down to the VOA and BBC Persian as their budgets were approved
by the U.S. Congress and British Parliament. Those who work there are all in
the same line."
He said the BBC and the U.S.
cable news network CNN had set up a
"situation room and a psychological war room." On Sunday, the BBC's permanent correspondent in Tehran,
Jon Leyne, was ordered expelled by the Iranian authorities, which accused him
of "supporting the rioters."
Earlier on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr
Mottaki also warned Europe and America
against meddling in Iran's
domestic issues.
Over the past few days, Washington
and a slew of European powers have adopted a raucous stance on the June 12
election, which saw incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad win by a landslide.
Defeated presidential rivals Mir-Hussein Mousavi and Mehdi
Karroubi have called for the results to be nullified and have demanded a
re-run, giving rise to eight consecutive days of protests and illegal rallies.
Qashqavi didn't rule out the expulsion of foreign diplomats.
"The issue of expulsion (of some European diplomats) is
now being evaluated in the Majlis and today, the foreign minister will consult
with the foreign policy commission of the Majlis on the dimensions of the
interference."
Qashqavi lashed out at the European media for having joined
their governments in "supporting anarchism," labeling this approach
as "unacceptable."
On Sunday, the Foreign Ministry summoned E.U. diplomats to
protest the remarks of their leaders which were an interference in
Iran's
internal affairs.
