'Iran's Ayatollahs
are Doomed'
"For
fear of one day having to account for their actions, the regime of the small
strikes out ever harder, in a spiral of violence specific to all desperate dictatorships
… History will one day render its verdict on whether this was triggered by Barack
Obama's outstretched hand. But to remain the masters, the theocrats need 'Great
Satan' to be shouted at every gathering. … In any event, Europe and the United
States have no option but that of virtuous condemnation. The implosion will come."

In Tehran, every hour that
passes is like a terrible countdown clock ticking away toward a brutal
repression or perhaps a bloodbath. All in the name of God, according to the ayatollahs,
on behalf of the "Islamic order" advocated by religious leaders desperate
to maintain their theocracy. In reality, it is a dictatorship that guarantees
them privileges and impunity on a bed of corruption.
"Supreme Leader"
Khamenei left no doubt of the regime's intentions. There is no question of he,
his royal court or his cronies - including Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - engaging in a
bit of power sharing. Particularly not with hierarchs from other power centers,
those "reformer" supporters of the same Islamic Republic, perhaps
followers of a more civilized governance but certainly not democrats.

There's no
question of the hundreds of thousands of Bassidj militiamen [a kind of morality
police] and other guardians of the revolution giving up an ounce of their status,
acquired through their body-and-soul allegiance to the turbaned ones from whom
they obtain employment and subsidies. Because the system is securely locked inside
a strange mixture of Stalinism, corporate fascism ... and religious devotion.
So, for fear of one day having to account for their actions, the regime of the small
strikes out ever harder, in a spiral of violence specific to all desperate dictatorships.

Because the ayatollahs in
Iran are doomed. The elites and well-educated young can no longer support living
in terror, without a professional future, with a "moral order" from
another age and with public executions and stoning. But the agonizing
convulsions are terrible. Every day, the theocracy of the mullahs finds new ways
of protecting itself from the "contamination" of Western forces. This
rigidity is similar in its origins to the Maoist "Cultural Revolution,"
triggered in 1966 by a clan struggle within the Chinese Communist Party. After
a decade of isolation and another period of "repair," China changed
course and has converted to capitalism ... yet the privileges provided to their
communist nomenklatura
have been retained.

History will one
day render its verdict on whether this was triggered by Barack Obama's outstretched
hand. But to remain the masters, the theocrats need "Great Satan" to
be shouted at every gathering. And in Israel, their more imminent enemy is consequently
denied the sufferings of the Holocaust. Openness to the outside world is a
mortal threat to the ayatollahs. Their survival strategy is to remain in an isolated
crouch.
In any event, Europe and the
United States have no option but that of virtuous condemnation. The implosion
will come.
