Obama Chooses the Best People: What a Concept!

"Could we please have an Austrian chancellor grasp the concept of assembling a team comprised of the best minds? We have had enough with groups of amateurs brought together on the basis of proportionality and in accordance with demands by state and federal bean counters."

Timothy Geithner, President-elect Barack Obama's choice for U.S. treasury secretary. He'll be one of the most powerful Treasury secretaries in U.S. history.

Obama is picking the best people for his cabinet. At some point, that would be a nice change for Austria too.

This is in fact one possible way to form a government. Barack Obama, the new U.S. president, has decided upon this obvious but rarely used method: He is simply choosing the best minds to grapple with the issues, and is putting people in his cabinet who actually understand their respective portfolios.

The best example of this is Timothy Geithner [photo, right http://worldmeets.us/imagesui/readiconmini.gif]. The new [pick for] U.S. treasury secretary has not only studied Chinese, he has most recently been chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and prior to that he was undersecretary of the treasury for international affairs. [Obama's pick for] commerce secretary, Bill Richardson, earned his chops as secretary of energy. Republican Robert Gates, the incumbent secretary of defense, may well keep his position - simply because he does a good job.

Naturally, the new president also surrounds himself with trusted aides and those who were early supporters. But it's nonetheless impressive to witness Obama's willingness to accept high-caliber people, like his rival Hillary Clinton, as secretary of state.

No one yet knows whether Obama’s all-stars will jell as a team and pull together in the right direction. In the beginning, Bush also impressed by appointing professionals like Colin Powell, Dick Cheney or Donald Rumsfeld.

But setting aside that not unimportant exception: Could we please have an Austrian chancellor grasp the concept of assembling a team comprised of the best minds? We have had enough with groups of amateurs brought together on the basis of proportionality and in accordance with demands by state and federal bean counters.
