Hillary Rodham Clinton: A force to be
reckoned with in her own
right, is she ready to be an instrument of Obama's
Presidency?

Clinton Pick a
Bold Expression of Obama's Strength
"Clinton would be a tough diplomat,
traversing the global stage with self-confidence. That's a lot for any man -
albeit a president - to contend with. … Two strong opponents during the
election campaign, magnifying their strength through cooperation and
reconciliation. A beautiful and almost idealistic dream. Will it become
reality?"

Barack Obama would be
taking a wise step if he were to nominate Hillary Clinton to be Secretary of
State. She has the international experience, which he lacks, and she would be a
strong and credible supporter.
Here she is again: Hillary
Rodham Clinton, the woman who always was and will continue to be more than just
“the woman at his side,” be it Bill Clinton or now Barack Obama. Rumors are
circulating that Barack Obama has offered her the post of secretary of state.
Consider these two
individuals and cast your minds back to their historic duel: It was a duel not
just between a man and woman, but between a Black man and a feminist woman. It
wasn't the type of contest that would cast her in the role of loser.
Expediency is part
of politics; tactics and power are inextricable. For most of her life, this
woman has ascended to the summit of power and success. Accusing her of these
traits and in effect labeling her a "careerist," while at the same
time romanticizing Obama’s glorified indecisiveness, may well have pained this
Machiavellian woman; a woman who, after all, managed to push herself to shed
some motherly tears just to prove she's human [see cartoon below]. But in times
of crises, American culture displays strengths that we Europeans are not
capable of. For example humbly bowing to your opponent at a moment of personal
defeat and putting oneself at their service - Hillary Clinton did just that (so
did John McCain, by the way). These aren't just empty gestures, but acts of
emancipation and humility. There is life afterwards, or better perhaps, life
goes on. That was certainly the case for Hillary Clinton's political life. Now
it seems that the prospect of a new role appears enticing.

Except it isn’t the vice
presidency she is being offered, but foreign policy. In other words the harsh
reality: the world as it is - not the way one would like it to be. Barack Obama
realizes that this post requires a strong, credible and solution-oriented
person, in the same way Bill Clinton chose Madeleine Albright. During the election
campaign it was Hillary Clinton who, not only on the issue of Iraq, conveyed a
clearer message than Obama did. And she knows the world better than he does.
Clinton would be a tough diplomat, traversing the global stage with
self-confidence. That's a lot for any man - albeit a president - to contend
with.

Will she answer
his call? The woman who continues to strive for her own presidency might sense
that the luster of an Obama presidency is something she intends to bask in. Two
strong opponents during the election campaign magnifying their strength through
cooperation and reconciliation. It's a beautiful and idealistic dream. Will it
become reality?
