Operation
New Dawn. The new name seems out of place to some.

America's 'Operation
New Dawn' is the Same Old Sunset
"As of next September, the name 'Operation Iraqi Freedom' will change to 'Operation New Dawn.'
No one exactly knows what 'Dawn' they're referring to, as they pack
and leave a nation and a people they imploded and humiliated for seven long years."
Nouri al-Maliki on campaign in Basra, Feb 20. He's been called everything from an American shill to an Iranian turncoat, but he's determined to win another term as Iraq's prime minister on March 7.
There's no public information
available about the way the United States code-names its foreign wars. And there
is no information about the results of investigations into the failures of any
of its military campaigns - or whether the names designated for them contradict
the statements or official attitudes in Washington.
The invasion of Iraq took
place under the moniker of "Operation
Iraqi Freedom," despite the fact that the discourse of the United
States at the U.N. and U.N. Security Council was dominated by "weapons of
mass destruction." Even today, for fear of being held accountable under
international law, the countries still participating in the U.S. coalition say
they're involvement began under the pretext of finding and dismantling weapons
of mass destruction rather than toppling the Iraqi government.
But after the multiple calamities
that have fallen on the heads of the sons of our country, the subject has
become outdated and has little value in today’s discourse.
Perhaps to further indulge in
the use of names that bear no resemblance to Iraqi reality, the Pentagon has decided
that as of next September, the name "Operation Iraqi Freedom" will change to "Operation New Dawn."
No one exactly knows what "Dawn" they're referring to, as they pack
and leave a nation and a people they imploded and humiliated for seven long years.
The Americans haven't told us
whether "Operation New Dawn" will require a new war or, if the label is
simply a verbal attachment to the last one. Because the name of an operation
doesn't reveal its true meaning.

This Iraqis haven’t seen a "New
Dawn." What they've seen is rivers of blood, deprivation, hunger, displacement,
a surge in the number of prisons and legislation allowing police to break into
homes at night and the use of force by people in uniform or out.
A new dawn for a country on
which the sun is setting. A new dawn for a country in which the number of
professionals - doctors, engineers, university professors, etc. - has plummeted
by more than half of what it was before the invasion.
And just as it was under the
former Baath regime - even worse in fact - the essential requirement for any government
job is unwavering loyalty to a certain faction.
A "New Dawn?" ... They
must be laughing at us; isn't this rubbing salt in our wounds as we die a slow
death?
Yes it’s a "New Dawn,"
where dark and heavy clouds have descended over my homeland.
