'Radical' Republicans
Threaten the United States with Ruin
"They
don’t 'believe' in climate change, think evolution should be taught as a 'theory,'
and stir doubts about whether Obama is a 'real' American. While much of this
can be shrugged off with a grin, bankruptcy threatens real consequences. The
Tea Party could succeed in doing what America’s enemies have only dreamed of:
driving the U.S. to ruin."
Republican House member Michele Bachmann leads the House Tea Party Caucus and is leading in Iowa's Republican straw poll. But the assertion by here and other Tea Party lawmakers that damage would be minimal if the U.S. fails to raise its debt ceiling is at odds with almost every economist outside of her Tea Party faithful.
Suddenly the unthinkable
seems possible. In a few days, the U.S. could for the first time declare
bankruptcy. Rather than dismissing this showdown between President Obama and Republicans
as the “usual theatre,” some opinion leaders are seriously concerned.
Of course both sides have
contributed to this gridlock. But the main responsibility lies squarely with the
Republicans. Driven by the right-wing populists of the Tea Party, they have
created a crisis where there shouldn’t be one. They have blown out of all
proportion the hundred-year-routine of raising the debt ceiling.

The Tea Party activists are talking
and acting like political hostage-takers. After weeks of negotiations, they
haven't moved an inch from their initial maximum demand. Hence, chances are
that on August 2nd, years of mistrust in Washington that have built up over the
years will result in an absolute worst-case scenario.
Not even warnings from the [financial
services] industry are taken seriously by the radicals. An inability to pay
does not exist. That was an invention by Obama. In his statement culminated the
same denial of reality that has made moderate conservatives homeless since the
days of George W. Bush. Today’s right-wing spokespeople don’t “believe” in
climate change, think evolution should be taught as a “theory,” and stir doubts
about whether Obama is a “real” American. While much of this can be shrugged off
with a grin, bankruptcy threatens real consequences. The Tea Party could
succeed in doing what America’s enemies have only dreamed of: driving the U.S.
to ruin.
