Sunnis Call for Iraq Vote Boycott to Protest Iranian Meddling
"We are shocked at the vile
and brazen interventionist mutterings of [Iranian President] Ahmadinidjad. … We
believe that holding the elections under such circumstances is against the
interests of our people and consistent with the wishes of Iran's rulers."
-- Press release of the
Central Council of Iraqi and Arab Tribal Sheikhs
Ahmed Chalabi (above) is one of Iraq's most divisive figures, who is said to have been the source of the faulty information the Bush Administration used to invade in 2003. He was later cut off by the Bush White House for 'unauthorized contacts with Iran.' He now heads Iraq's Accountability and Justice Commission, which is charged with disqualifying former members of Saddam's Baathist Party from standing in Iraq's national elections on March 7.
At a time when Iraq and its
people need to focus most on the national interest rather than religious
separatism; at a time when the hopes of Iraqis and all people who support their
aspirations are for halting the barbaric massacres of innocents; at a time when
there is hope for holding democratic elections with the participation of all
national parties; we are shocked at the vile and brazen interventionist
mutterings of [Iranian President] Ahmadinidjad. As Ahmadinidjad put it on Feb. 11,
he would not allow Baathists to return to the political process in Iraq.

[Editor's Note: The man who wrote this statement, Sheikh Ali al-Dulaimi, is the leader of the Al-Hatm clan and was a member of the Awakening Councils of Al-Anbar Province. Many observers credit these Sunni tribal groups - more than the American surge - with finally getting a handle on the violence that plagued the country after the fall of Saddam].
This is nothing
but a cover for removing popular and respected individuals from the political
process. The extent of the conspiracy became clear with Chalabi's last-minute
disqualification of candidates (photo box, right), which is widely considered his most recent
"political ploy." Therefore, the Central Council of Iraqi and Arab
Tribal Sheikhs strongly condemn this vile interference with the sovereignty of
Iraq. This is an attempt to restore terrorism, massacre and the spillage of the
most innocent blood. We therefore ask all patriotic Iraqis to protest these
treacherous attempts and interrupt the scuttling of the political process for
the sake of restoring religious separatism.
We believe that holding the
elections under such circumstances is against the interests of our people and
consistent with the wishes of Iran's rulers. We therefore call on all people to
boycott the voting. We call upon all relevant international bodies, particularly the United Nations, to rapidly intervene to prevent a disruption in
Iraq's political process and a return to massacres and religious separatism.
