The American proposal to reduce the number of nuclear weapons and the sudden positive response from Russia may not bring hope for a safer world, but at least a richer one. Both sides can profit from the agreement and one side even more than the other.

A rapid signing and implementation of disarmament agreements is good business for everyone. Americans will have to spend less on maintaining nuclear silos and 5,500 warheads - of which over 4,000 are ready for immediate use. This could mean more money to deal with the [financial] crisis, green activities or at least for transferring resources involved on the war in Afghanistan.

Russia (2,000-3,000 warheads) with benefit twice. The saved resources can shore up her crumbling economy. Meanwhile, that portion of its war arsenal to be liquidated has long been useless anyway - maintenance money has been in short supply since the 1990s. And so America will save on its actual nuclear potential, and Russia will save the money it has been spending to support a fiction that has been growing less and less credible.
